This is how it was explained to me....

Board game companies, which FFG fits under, run their products in batches. For instance they'll make 1000 of product X. After that is run, because of the number of different products they make they wont run that product again for whatever time frame they set up internally, a common frame being six months.

This was from a part owner of one of the local shops I go to, so I'm not claiming this is from FFG or I'm an insider, take it for what you will....but I guess it makes sense. /shrug

I personally work in distribution and we're out of products for months at a time due to forecasting being wrong or suppliers being unable to meet demand more frequently than you'd think, so I can see it happening.

FFG does not have its own manufacturing, so it competes in a general market with other companies wanting to mould and assemble plastic components, colour print cards and books, and collate the resulting stuff into the correct boxes.

Therefore FFG needs to contract for a specific run of production, say 10,000 units, and when it is finished they may not be able to get another slot at the right price even if the new SKU sells very well. Or they could only do it by deferring production of a new, different SKU.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Why the hell can't they just make enough stock...

Because they only have a certain budget of time, room and money. It's the same reason that you don't buy a lifetime supply of toilet paper, although you know you're going to need it. Even if you could afford it, where would store it all?

More like me refusing to buy more than one roll at a time then refusing to buy more until I have run out. I had plenty of sympathy when the game first came out. They had no idea how popular it would be and were shocked. I was sympathetic when they were in the first few waves. I think we are on the 4th reprint of the YT now, and the 6th wave, and they still can't make even vaguely enough, seem to be completely incapable of getting anywhere close to actually ordering enough production. At the moment FF have in stock the HWK, the Shuttle and the Headhunter and thats it. After two years they have had plenty of time to rent more warehouse space and hire more people to fulfill a market that is still going strong. Plenty of time to have a vague idea of how much will be sold on release. On top of that they never give anything but the vaguest of dates for releases and never give anything for re-prints. After this time there is no excuse for having so much out of stock.

I don't think they were expecting the YT-1300 to get a massive boost in sales due to "phantom fever". There was a while there where every rebel I saw had a falcon because they were terrified of the new phantom when wave 4 dropped.

FFG probably assumed that sales for that ship would slow now that it had been out a while, only to get blindsided again when everyone and their dog bought 2 to try and stop the Phantoms.

As for ship availability, the only ships I have a hard time finding are Y Wings (which the FFG store in Minneapolis actually has) occasionally B Wings and A Wings, and the Slave I. I don't want another Falcon, so them being rare right now doesn't bother me, but they're definitely hard to find.

If anyone is still after a Falcon I've found somewhere in the UK that still has them in stock.

I ordered one last night I just got an e-mail telling me it's been shipped today. According the website it's still In Stock.
