Being the uncouth philistine that I am: I don't like wine. White wine is usually too sweet and sickly. Red wine is often dry (not a quality I look for in a drink). It seems so hard to find a nice red. I spend ages meticulously reading all the labels, but regardless of what I pick: it always ends up tasting bland and dishwatery. Occasionally I find a nice red, but then I always forget the name. I do remember buying a rose once as a cheap present for someone I didn't like, but then I drank it myself, and actually, it was rather good (tasted like selfishness). There seems to be rather a lot of snobbery involved with wine, and real ales. I tend to just stick to premium largers, as I find them much more refreshing and consistent.

Funnily enough, I just came across an article about wine tasting being bs, which, as someone who doesn't really 'get'
wine, I found comforting. May as well share: http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/jun/23/wine-tasting-junk-science-analysis

Same here minus the premium.

Mate, you should get around a bit of Stella Artois. From a chalice, naturally:

Stella used to be good when it was 5.2%, but now they've dropped it down to a wife-friendly 4.8%, which is just sad. I've also come to hate those trendy glasses. Any overflow, spillage or condensation just collects on the base and isn't able to drain off until you tilt the glass to drink it, then it drips all over your trousers. I prefer just the ordinary straight glasses.

Isn't Stella basically slang for domestic violence in the UK? I heard something to that effect from a British buddy.

Yes, it is colloquially known as Wifebeater.

Vodka? Are we peasants? Give me a good scotch over such bourgeois spirits any day.

If we're talking beer, I've been slowly consuming the last of my stash of Heady Topper recently. When it is gone, I will be rather distraught.

In terms of Rose, the Mrs. enjoys it as a 'beach wine'. She enjoys reds much more often, primarily Zinfandel. Rose appears reserved for when her and the other ladies want to have more than a glass or five.

Still, you can make wine from roses oddly enough. (And clover, and apple, pumpkin, rice, hell anything that rots really.)

Whilst true in principle, don't most alcoholic beverages made from fermented fruits/grains/vegetables other than grapes have their own name?

Though I may start referring to Vodka as Potato Wine from now on

Most vodka is made from various grains rather than potatoes these days.

Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum... trouble is it makes me tetchy so the wife has banned it

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

I love rose, sweet red, and white zinfandel. They are all very tasty in the summer over top a few ice cubes.

Nope. Wine refers to almost any alcoholic beverage made from fermenting fruit. Rice Wine and Barley Wine are not technically wines, Barley Wine being a high proof beer and Rice Wine being something else entirely, that really is just a name given to cover a range of cereal based alcoholic drinks that are produced in a completely different way to either wine or beer and has just been called wine because of the alcohol content.

What your thinking of is distilled spirits, many of which do have their own names. Vodka is an odd one. It is now often made from wheat, but more and more potato Vodkas are being made at the top end of the market. Vodka, however can be made from anything, and refers to a colorless, theoretically tasteless, spirit. It can be made from wheat, potatoes, sugar beat, fruit, or in some (very desperate cases in the old USSR) chairs, tables, or any other plant material to hand that could be forced to ferment (which is not recommended as it makes at least some methanol, otherwise know as wood alcohol, that can cause blindness or death). Interestingly Vodka from wheat in Russian pharmacology is often called "Vodka of grain wine".

It took me a few posts to work out you're all talking about Rosé wine (Ros-ay) instead of the stuff made from the petal bush:
http://www.lurgashall.co.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=details&prodID=14&curcatID=2
I have bottles of both.

I usually only drink white, , occasionally red, and rosé third.
We get through more mead wine (real mead is a pain to get hold of), black-beer-and-raisin and other fruit wines than any of them, though.
Rosé has a place, but I haven't found it yet.

The funny thing is I have grape vines growing wild in my back yard and couldn't stand them going to waste any longer. So I learned how to make wine this week, now the first thing I think of when I see anything organic is "how can I make booze out of this".
