I was talking to some people my age the other night (18-21) and just under half of them where dissapointed to hear this. Anecdotal, but a decent portion said the puppets and stuff looked awful compared to computer yoda.

Really? I thought it was kinda ridiculous. That jumping around didn't give Yoda any real advantage and in real life he'd probably just end up jumping into a swing of Palpatines lightsaber. Then again I thought a lot of the jedi fight scenes in the prequels were ridiculous. If they spent less time twirling their lightsaber around and more time actually attaacking their opponent they'd beat them a lot quicker.
Case in point:
What is the point of that?! It is not going to beat your opponent!
Best lightsaber duel for me is still Luke versus Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi (original scene, not what Lucas turned it into with his tampering).

I'm glad they're coming back round to the practical effects. It's why the original films and similarly the Indiana Jones films still have their charm when compared to their soulless predecessors.

Agreed that the older ones are better, far more emotion and less stupid wafting. Although I think Bespin is better than Death Star as Luke's inexperience comes through a lot more so Vader seems more menacing. My top three:
1) Luke vs Vader, Empire
2) Luke vs Vader, Return
3) Obi-wan and Qui-Gon vs Maul. This one perfectly balances emotion/skill with newer SFX to create something genuinely awesome.

Agreed, there is just something utterly terrifying about Vader looking Luke square in the eye, and lowering that lightsabre- you aren't even worthy of staining his blade, sucka!

I dislike the puppets and prefer the animation. Personal preference.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Plus, in all of the original trilogy lightsaber duels there is a mental battle going on underneath the physical duel. In A New Hope it's Obi-Wan preparing himself so that he can live on past death to guide Luke, in Empire Strikes Back it is Vader trying to seduce Luke to the Dark Side of the Force and in Return of the Jedi it is Luke trying to save his father and bring him back from the Dark Side.

So much this.
I tried to explain this to people on a Star Wars page on Facebook and it was like talking to a wall. People just saying, "OMG, that fight is soooo boring!!!11!!1! I like the fights with all the flips!" Kids these days don't appreciate something with emotion, they just want their flashy CGI.

I think this is a huge factor in what makes the original trilogy duels so much better than the duels in the prequels, Obi-Wan vs. Vader in particular. Technically speaking, it is pretty easily the weakest of all of the lightsaber duels, but the inner battle going on between Obi-Wan and Vader, the master finally confronting his fallen apprentice while trying to both save and guide his new apprentice, the "New Hope," gives the fight so much more tension than many of the technically complex lightsaber battles of the prequel trilogy. The dialogue is simple, but it cuts straight to the core.

Puppets are superior to CGI in all cases, unless the name "Gerry Anderson" is involved. "Super" marionation my hairy butt...

Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)
Thousands Sons (undergoing Warband re--- wait, are any of my 40K armies playable?)
Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios
I think you need to use both.
Use the puppet whenever you can and use CGI for when you can't. Or use Motion Capture with real acting.
