I might change my lists now that I can Deep Strike them in, but I used to run a Malanthrope alongside them for Shrouded and Synapse, along with a screening unit of 10-15 Hormagaunts to give them 3+ Cover. They essentially have a 24" range once you factor in Movement.
As for an example army, this is what I used to use when I wasn't allowed to use formations.
Do love me some Carnifexes Had two units of two as three is a bit of a points sink whereas one unit would easily be focused down.

As someone said, they will attract some fire, but one mindset you need to have as Tyranids is "Here's a bunch of scary targets, which one will you focus down? That one? Cool, I have these others". And if they don't focus fire, then there you go, your stuff won't die.
But, to help with Carnifexes, I march them up behind gaunts and warriors and put Venomthropes next to them for a 3+ cover save, so Lascannons and Missiles become less of a problem.

As a nid player, I think the most important advice I've given to new players of the hive mind is nids thrive in quantity over quality. Most new players I see take way too many upgrades on their MCs and in general. It gets expensive to put regen, TS, AG, crushing claws, etc on everything. Nid lists should keep the upgrades to a minimum. There are some that will usually make their points back, but one of the best things for nids is threat overload. Having more units will force your opponent to either try to deal with them all (and probably fail) or focus on a few and therefor ignore the others. The way I usually explain it is this: if you take regen on a MC, that's equivalent 7 terms or 6 horms. That regen MAY get your MC back a wound or two, but that's all down to dice rolls. Those extra bodies will absorb shots no matter what, which will provide more help for your MCs.

Well, as uncle joe Stalin said: "quantity has a quality of it's own!". I think I'll try swarming. Hormagaunts seem fun, just leave them bare right?

I greatly prefer the Tyranofex, and I consider the Tervigon...a little over priced. But the final tally is based on your "style". So I suggest you try Magnitising.

That's what I tend to do. I run 2 squads of 20 bare horms that I stretch out in front of the rest of my swarm. They will provide a screen for your more important troops, and your opponent will either have to focus on killing them or shoot over them.
Of course, I will admit that I have a bias to play more swarm style lists. Most of my 2k lists have over 150 models on the board turn 1. I just tell my opponent to try and kill them all.

Havelock wrote:One thing I read was use the trygon tunnel to pop a full brood of those new zoanthropes out next to enemy armor
The problem is with the way the Trygon's tunneling ability works: you have to get the trygon in BEFORE the unit you want to come through the tunnel, the Zo's can't even come in the same turn, only units that come in from reserve in turns following the turn the Trygon came in can use the tunnel making it wholly unreliable. I actually rewrote the ability for a home brewed character I wrote a while ago (mind you, this was a 25 point upgrade as well):
-Vanguard of the Assault: If you choose to Deep Strike The World Scourge, he automatically arrives turn 1. Immediately after The World Scourge arrives, 1 other Infantry or Beast unit may immediately arrive from reserve using the Subterranean Assault rules. Each subsequent turn, up to 2 Infantry or Beast units arriving from reserve may do so via Subterranean Assault. The World Scourge and any unit arriving from reserve this way gains Stealth until the beginning of your next turn.
