I generally only use white on NMM or as the final element of edge highlighting. I've seen pros use it to great effect but the thing about white is you have to use tiny amounts in really really small areas to create intense contrast.

I think its an optical illusion that convinces your brain that there is a lot more white than there is.

I found that out when in my many NMM attempts I used white way too much ( i still do) and unless you use it as those tiny super bright reflections it looks wrong and ruins the contrast of what you are painting.
