Do they really need to 'go' anywhere? I mean everyone who has ever existed is a permanent part of the universe. We perceive time from one moment to the next, but perhaps all of time exists in some sense simultaneously. Just because I read to the end of a book does not mean the book stops existing, or that the pages suddenly turn blank. The story is still there, I'm just not reading it right now.
I was with my father when he died, and even though it was heartbreaking, I can recall times when we were laughing together, like laughing so hard that I couldn't breath. I like to think that somewhere in time, we're still there laughing together, and we always will be.
