Man, what a shame. Here's hoping they take care of this guy before he does anything else insane.

For those of you staying with family as defenders, good on you and good luck.

Just as an aside to non military folks - "Earned several medals" is military jargon for "showed up". You literally get several medals for just not being a criminal and doing your job.

I was a filthy stinking fobbit (sat on a base and barely if ever went outside the wire so as to make sure everyone had internet) and I recieved... uh.... I think eight medals?

Shelter in place for Bucks was lifted, so hopefully some progress is being made.

Apparently the thought of reasoning for Stone's shooting was a custody battle with his ex-wife over their two daughters.

Was he ever actually a regular Marine or was he always a reservist Marine?

Reservists are initially on active duty for training and go through the exact same training pipeline alongside their active duty peers, so he would have been on active duty for that period. Then once he got sent to his first unit he'd go on reserve status, most likely training on weekends and in the summer. But when he was mobilized and deployed he would have been called to active duty for however long the deployment was, and probably for pre-deployment training in addition to that. So the basic answer to your question is yes, he was on active duty.

If only he was flying a black flag. This would be a big story.

I was mostly curious, as it doesn't really change much. The full time Marines I know aren't always saying very nice things about reservists, but I think that has to do with a bunch of other things outside of not being able to do their job. I think that was also a point in Generation Kill, if I recall correctly. Again, doesn't really change anything either way, just curious.

Yeah, there isn't a huge difference, and both components play an important role. The training and missions are the same. Being a reservist nowadays is a lot different than being a reservist in the pre-9/11 world, when for a while there was little expectation of getting deployed. There are some reservists who have deployed just as much as their active duty counterparts. Generation Kill, while a good book, is problematic because it deals very heavily with stereotypes and presents what is meant to be a lance corporal's-eye view of the invasion. In addition, there usually isn't a very high understanding of how the reserves work, both from their active duty counterparts who have no experience on the reserve side, and from civilians who often don't really know the difference either, so that complicates things.

For a historical perspective, an extremely large portion of the Marines in the Korean War were reservists, to the order of over 85,000, which was about 45% of the Marines on active duty at the time. At the end of the day, a Marine is a Marine.

Dreadful news.

Those poor children especially.

Stay safe dakkanauts !

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

Im confused by pretty much all of this, but if you are going to blast your ex-wife's entire family and go on the run, why go towards cities (Doylestown, Philly, Trenton), instead of away from there (Lancaster). From Pennsburg and Souderton its about the same distance either way.

The body of the Marine veteran who police say shot and killed his ex-wife and five of her relatives in a multi-town shooting spree outside Philadelphia was discovered Tuesday in a wooded area, authorities said.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Bradley William Stone, 35, was found dead in woods about 200 yards from his home in Pennsburg. Authorities said he killed himself.

Authorities had been focusing earlier Tuesday on the northwestern part of Montgomery County in their hunt for Stone, one day after he killed his family members amid a bitter child custody dispute. The early morning rampage left dead bodies in three different homes in the county.

The search had spread to two Pennsylvania counties as authorities urged residents to be "vigilant and cautious," warning that Stone was armed and dangerous.

"It’s been extremely harrowing," Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said during a press conference earlier Tuesday.

"Our SWAT teams have been out nonstop," said Ferman, who was surrounded by representatives from several law enforcement agencies. "We are accessing every possible resource and we are utilizing every possible law enforcement tool to find Mr. stone."

Some schools were closed Tuesday, hospitals and other public places increased security and residents remained on heightened alert, even as officials lifted a shelter-in-place order for parts of Bucks County, where a knife-wielding, fatigue-clad man resembling suspect Stone attempted a carjacking Monday night. But there was no immediate confirmation that the carjacking suspect.

Ferman said Stone was known to use a cane or walker to assist him, but it's possible he did not need them. Pennsburg is located 48 miles northwest of Philadelphia, and Doylestown is about 27 miles north of the city.

Ferman said the rampage began around 3:30 a.m. Monday, when Stone allegedly shot and killed Patricia Flick, the sister of his ex-wife, Nicole Stone, at her home in Souderton, also killing Flick's husband, Aaron Flick, and her 14-year-old daughter, Nina Flick. Her 17-year-old son, Anthony Flick, was receiving treatment at a hospital in Philadelphia for a head wound and remains in "serious by stable condition," Ferman said.

Nicole Stone's mother, Joanne Hill, and grandmother Patricia Hill were killed next at their home in nearby Lansdale. Investigators were alerted by a hang-up call to emergency dispatchers, Ferman said.

Then, around 5 a.m., Stone went to Nicole Stone's apartment, located in the Harleysville section of Lower Salford Township, investigators said. Stone broke in through a glass door, shot and killed Nicole Stone, and fled with their two children, the woman's neighbors said. Authorities said Stone then delivered the two children, who were unharmed, to a neighbor in Pennsburg.

All three towns are within a few minutes of each other.

Ferman had said authorities recovered Stone's vehicle and his cellphone. She also said Stone's current wife and infant child are safe and secure as well as his two daughters by his former wife.

Friends of the family were shocked to hear of the rampage.

"(Nicole Stone) would tell anybody who would listen that he was going to kill her, and that she was really afraid for her life," said Evan Weron, a neighbor of Stone's ex-wife, Nicole Stone.

"Everything started being blocked off, the SWAT was then later called in, then we had the tanks pull up," said Don Smith, describing the scene near his Souderton home.

Brad and Nicole Stone, 33, married in 2004 and filed for divorce in March 2009, according to court records.

The former couple recently sparred over custody of their two children, with Brad Stone filing an emergency petition Dec. 5 and Nicole Stone responding with a counterclaim Dec. 9, according to court records. The outcome of their dispute was not clear.

Nicole Stone's neighbors at the Pheasant Run Apartments in Harleysville said they were awakened Monday morning by the sounds of breaking glass and gunshots.

Weron said Nicole Stone would talk frequently about the custody dispute.

"(Nicole) came into the house a few times, a few separate occasions, crying about how it was very upsetting to her," Weron said.

Stone served in Iraq and held the rank of sergeant at the time of his discharge in 2008, U.S. Marine Corps records show.
