Posts like mine are not based on the number of barrels modelled as that way lies madness and serious inconsistencies.

It's a MULTI-melta, hence firing multiple salvos at the same time (or at least in quick succession).

Alternatively, it's a bunch of short ranged melta weapons stuck together. So instead, make it like a melta flamethrower. But... As a template would be pretty op give it some other rule. The one that comes to mind is wall of death. So I'm thinking give it d3 autohits at 6 inches. That way it takes into account th e multiple barrels as creating a more dispersed beam. It will be stronger vs everything, but at much shorter range. Seems fairly balanced to me, although I am not sure if it should still be heavy.

I can't agree with you more. Multi meltas have 2 barrels, and they really should be twin linked. Like, if one ray of intense heat missed, the other might hit.

From a gaming perspective, they're better off with 24 range than 12' twinlinked.

Make all shotguns twinlinked!

Twinlinked is there to give some weapons an increased chance to hit without increasing the BS of the using model. It has nothing to do with number of barrels. When Triarch Stalkers made weapons twin-linked, it didn't slap an extra barrel onto them.
