The red is too dark in comparison with the blue.

That is the main point.

They are the army I would like to play, I would consider maybe doing an Imperial Army, and add Space Wolves into the mix, because I love their fluff and they look badass as well.

Heads and some guns are a good item to paint on the sprue, because GW makes the injection point (where the plastic flows into the mold, and where you must clip it) in a place that you can't see when it's cut afterwards (like the neck, or the bottom of a gun). However, the rest of the model is cruddy to paint (or even prime) on the sprue, because once you snip it off the sprue, you will end up with an ugly, uncovered spot can't correct it in a seamless/invisible way. Also, mold lines are harder (or impossible) to remove, for some items while on the sprue.

Once you paint a few, you'll start to debate to yourself which parts to preassemble before priming and/or painting, and what parts to glue on after. Fun stuff!

My thing when I started was that my first 70 or so models I did at breakneck speeds so that I could *play* with them... then the miracle of getting fieldable units faded, and I started spending more and more time on models. Now, there's rarely (I can probably safely say, "never") a model that I spend less than 5 hours on, and 20+ hours for one infantry sized miniature is not uncommon.

Good job on your first models!!!

I will be working on my first assault marines tomorrow, and I will post a picture as soon as I finish the first one.

Here is the first one.

Needs a few touch ups, then need to add the decals.

They look pretty decent but on most of the minis you can see that you didn“t cover all the base coat. On the last Marine you can see black spots on the jump pack. Apart from that they are looking great. You need just some tiny adjustments and your stuff will put veterans to shame!

There is a base coat of Macragge Blue on them, I just need to touch up those spots.

a wash! get a wash!
Looking really sweet, but a wash would really help breakup the solid colours, for example where the knee pad meets the lower leg armour. A wash would give a little definition there.

But otherwise looking really sweet When you planning your first game?

Favourite Game: When your Warboss on bike wrecks 3 vehicles simply by HoW - especially when his bike is a custom monowheel.

I fear that the wash is going to darken the coloring too much.

Never fear!

But in general if you apply it patiently and only in crevices, or thin it then it wont do so. Honestly try it you'll be surprised I think by how much it adds to a model really easily. You can always decide you dont like it But otherwise how will you know?!

tornado alley, United States

I think somebody stated before, try doing a test with the wash on a spare bit, or failing that, use a spruce piece with some lettering/numbers on it. It'll give you a basic idea of what the wash will do to your colors.

Or you can find some super cheap green army men, prime and paint one up to run a test job, instead of overpainting one of your models.

Which red did you use for the sergeant helm?

(I only use citadel paints, so I'm taking a guess at what color you used by the picture)
If that's a Khorn red, try a dry brush with either evil suns scarlet or wild rider red. That might lighten it up enough so that it doesn't look quite so off in comparison.
