One of their main traits is sheer, all-encompassing arrogance. In their hubris, both the Commorrites and the Craftworlders believe that they have found a way to trick Slaanesh out of their souls. However, the Commorrites basically survive by replacing the soulstuff they lose with the souls of others, ensuring a steady stream of souls go to Slaanesh (plus, their sadistic practices no doubt feed Slaanesh as well). The Craftworlders are also just as hubristic. They think that their Path system protects them from Slaanesh, but really what they do is dedicate themselves wholly to one aspect of their lives completely, mastering it before moving on to another (with some getting stuck along the way). If that doesn't hit the whole 'endless pursuit of perfectionism' angle of Slaanesh I don't know what does.

Wow, I'd never considered those angles. How about Harlequins, Exodites, or pirates?

Here's to me in my sober mood,
When I ramble, sit, and think.
Here's to me in my drunken mood,
When I gamble, sin, and drink.
And when my days are over,
And from this world I pass,
I hope they bury me upside down,
So the world can kiss my ass!

Oh yeah, i don't think that the newcron fluff is particularly bad. It just pales in comparison to the mysterious primordial lovecraftian horror of the Oldcron fluff. It was really masterfully done, even though it didn't lend itself so well to 'your dudes'.

The Newcron fluff just feels massively derivative, rather than 'inspired by other fantasy universes'. They've gone from unknowable cosmic horror to petty bickering egyptians in space.

You're right though, there is a middle ground. Keep the more unique Lords. I like the concept of Anrakyr. The rest feel far too cheesy or hammy. Cheesyness and hammyness is for Orks. Necron characters should be chillingly terrifying, as far as i'm concerned.
