You're going to place one part of one part of one white dwarf article as definitive over years of codices and rulebooks?
If you're going to go off on some weird tangent where you believe that alpha legion is really loyalist marines, then use the codex and minis for loyalist marines. If you're going to play the actual alpha legion, then use the
CSM codex. You have plenty of options to do a fluffy
AL list, so long as you don't corrupt the fluff by foisting extra arbitrary restrictions on yourself.
Well, there's that and
Legion of course, which probably stands as the amongst largest amount of information ever written about the Alpha Legion, and is decidedly ambivalent about their motivations. There's certainly as much to suggest they're working to some higher agenda, and have been branded traitor because the Imperium don't deal very well with shades of grey, as there is to suggest that they turned. There's also the angle that they're traitors who have been tricked and believe they're loyal.
There's plenty of doubt about their true allegiance.
I thought Legion was pretty clear about their ultimate motivation for turning. During the Heresy, they were given the choice of siding with Horus and ensuring the Imperium's continued prosperity (after a rough patch of course) or staying loyal and watching the Imperium wither and die a slow death. They joined Horus to SAVE the Imperium, not conquer it, not to devote themselves to the gods of Chaos. I'd imagine they are rather bitter because even though they sided with Horus, the Imperium still won and is dying the slow death that was prophecied. As for their current motivations, who knows, maybe they eventually turned to Chaos because of their bitterness, maybe they feel that if the Emperor finally dies, the Imperium will experience the prophecied prosperity (this is my personal belief). Chances are, we'll never get a clear picture of the legion as it is in the 41st millenium.
Personally, I have always felt that the Alpha Legion, more than any other traitor legion, really need their own stand-alone codex (not a supplement) because they don't fit in the
CSM mold and they don't work as loyalists. Their depicted style of warfare is so different from any other marine army, traitor or loyalist, and there currently isn't a great way to represent them.
