Great for basecoating and directional lighting, but honestly the time required to maintain/set up/mix/prime an airbrush set makes it far less easy to pick up and move that just a normal set of brushes.

It comes down to preference really. I personally dislike the gradient look on some of the pure-airbrushed techniques, but appreciate the kind of time, discipline and accuracy required to get to that sort of skill level.

That said for the undercoat, I cannot get a thinner coat than with an airbrush. It's truly insane. However you'll see that the undercoat tends to chip as it's a really thing acrylic coat, not enamel like you would find in a spray coat, so they would always require sealing.

It's a great way to add to your techniques, but not a complete replacement for the brush, as you end up losing out on techniques as a result.

That's why Vallejo Airbrush primer is a polyurethane for example. Never had a problem with that.

But them that's like the whole spray paint is not primer conversation....
