I used to get the map turn white as snow as well so i assume mine was issues with my old graphics card.

I assume you've tried lower graphics settings?

Yep. Don't think th graphics settings were the problem.

Medieval Total war gold was my fave. having small elite armies wipe out 4 stacks of armies just like that.
Its just a pity that Total war 1 doesn't work anymore on windows 8. so annoying having to put up a virtual machine for one game.

Honestly I think I have to go with Rome 2. After two years (!) I have finally gotten the game to run on my PC and some of the battles are just glorious.

In my mind nothing can beat deploying a mass of heavily armoured pikemen on top of a hill, placing 20 or so balistae behind them and bombarding an oncoming horde of Gauls into smithereens until only a few stragglers are left to impale themselves into my spears. Just glorious.

Rome 2 also inspired a conference paper of mine which pretty much consisted of how annoying horse archers were. Those guys sure know how to ruin a good battle plan with all their running around flanking my carefully organized ranks...
