It should be noted that even Inquisitors who fall on the nice end of the spectrum won't necessarily shy away from brutal techniques. They might not as readily employ such techniques, but they'll not shy away either.

Puritan doesn't mean they use less messy methods, it means they adhere strictly to the rules and doctrine. Radicals are more flexible. Neither will avoid the more damaging interrogation techniques, they'll all be result orientated.

If someone is a puritan, they don't become less Puritan if they flay a prisoner to get information out of him. They would become less Puritan if they started dabbling in some heretical practices or bending the rules.
