I play dark eldar and, in the past, I have made a random empty fast attack Venom my warlord because they move around the board so much it's like playing that game with the ball under the cups. I run lists where my HQ is isn't even a character (Lhamaean), so I will make the toughest model in my list my warlord. It is really common for my entire army to have no characters at all.

The rule for choosing a warlord says that you must choose any character to be your warlord. If you have no characters then ANY MODEL must be chosen as your warlord. You have to have a warlord but it doesn't have to be a character. Opens up a lot of possibilities.

Hope this helps.

Most infantry unit entries now include at least one character automatically, so it's getting harder and harder to run an entire army without any characters...

Imperial Knights are the only ones that come to mind.

Dark eldar are really good at not caring about characters. Not that all their HQs are bad, they are just very situational. And unlike most other armies I have looked at (space marine chapters) they don't have any kind of lone wolf style characters in the elite slot. Neither of their troops come with characters automatically and they can be upgraded to elites. In fact, looking at my dex, I just realized that not a single one of my units force me to take a character. They are all optional upgrades. Guess that's just how space pirates roll.

To be totally honest, I will probably avoid using characters until The Duke or The Baron reappear.

Wow. I'm surprised, but I don't have Codex: Dark Eldar for 7th edition. I just have the last one they published (4th Ed?), and I know they were upgrades back then. Of course, back then, lots of squad sergeants were considered upgrades, and now most automatically have them in the base unit. I guess that's why I assumed DE would have followed suit.
