IIRC I joined old Dakka early 2001, so just short of 15 years. I rounded up a little.

Probably closer to 2004.

IIRC, the forums didn't expand past local until 2003-2004.

I've been on Dakka since back in the EZ Board days, which predates the store by a few years and I'm definitely not what you'd call 'local', having lived in the Cincinnati area almost all of my life.

2001, early 2002 at the very latest, yes Dakka was a store based website, but I never visited the store. BFG was in full swing and I searched online for forums for BFG to find info, and was led to Dakka. I actually became the main BFG guru of the Dakka of the day, and was known as the 'Fleet Commissar', back when Mauleed was the main authority on 40K.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Yeah, I don't remember exactly when I signed up, but I've been on the forums since at least 2002.

Perhaps naturally, I quite agree. And while, as a member of the moderator team here, I should like on behalf of said team to claim a large portion of the credit for that, it really is down to the core cadre of regular users who have been frequenting this site for years (yes, including the ones I most often disagree with in matters of religion, politics, and similar).

Honestly, I find myself agreeing.

I have about 9000 posts on the official World of Warcraft forum, and that and here is the two places I frequent the most.

Said forum (specifically my realm subforum that I spend most of my time in) has mostly a good community, but it suffers a lot from its ineffective moderation.

For example, a group of not-very-nice guys made this video to bully a player they don't like. It's been up on the forum for days now. How long would it take for the Dakka mods to apply a banhammer to the subjects if the same thing was attempted here?

Spoiler:

(To make it more understandable: The red thing you barely see is a 'dislike' button, as the forum uses a like/dislike rating system. The pasted-in faces are the avatars of the relevant posters.)

The mods on that forum are also far less involved in the community. It's much easier to be passive-aggressive and snide by making references that other players understand but go completely over the heads of the moderators.

Point of perspective. Moderators that are not, at the same time, active users can also be a benefit because they're less involved. While DakkaDakka in general has an outstanding moderation team, there have been cases where moderators ban-threatened or even warned / banned users in a debate after losing their cool and being /too/ involved in the topic.

Blizzard forums are run rather well but are nothing compared to Blizz forums years ago with very strict moderation. Sadly.

They do very well covering up general spam and trolling, actually. It's just that some things go over their heads.

Dakka's team seems like the best of two worlds. They are involved, understanding and passionate, yet they are firm and won't take no bullgak.

Indeed they do. They were even better a few years ago...well...quite a few years actually now. I used to work as a moderator for Blizz forums and I have never seen a better moderation and, what matters more, the profesionnalism among mods that is unparalleled to this very date. Very clear guidelines, good supervision, good selection process etc.

It has a context, you know.

If the people are friends, arguably not.

If they already have a history of passive-aggressiveness and similar unpleasantries, a video where X user is depicted as executing Y user is surely not difficult to interpret as offensive.

As said, I think Dakka's is even better, but that is because they understand their community more and interacts with the community down on its own level, with its own things. Blizzard's moderators are more people who just appear, ban X user, delete Y post, but are much more secluded.

Sure it is.

You don't be a pussy and you turn your computer off.

Done.

Or feth, ridicule them for how slapdash the thing was. If someone feels "bullied" or gets "offended" by that, they they need to start shopping in the adult pants section.

That's what I intended to express with "professionalism". Professional mods aren't "better" by any kind of objective standards. Some prefer professional mods, some prefer more "down to earth" mods who get in touch with users.

'Professional', to me, implies that they are simply very good at their jobs and no-nonsense about it.

That applies to Dakka's mods as well.

Instead of discussing semantics, let's agree to have different definitions of "professional" and that almost every mod on Dakka does a great job

Except when the random BANEings start.

It doesn't matter who the moderators are, what matters is their plan.

Dakka is definitely not the best forum I've posted on. It's not the worst either, but it's pretty bad.
