I take a single interceptor squad or strike squad to man the comms relay for my GK force. I also take a unit of henchmen and crusaders to use kazamarov's no scatter orbital strike relay on in my inquisition detachment. they do have a purpose, and are even sometimes fun to use in friendly games.

Absolutely, my Salamanders lists are usually built around this. Ironclads in drop pods, LotD, deep striking land speeders with multimeltas, all are units that I throw right into the teeth of the enemy with the expectation that they will die (since they will cause a lot of damage if the enemy ignores them). Their primary purpose is to take the heat off of my tac squads and bikes, who are doing the actual objective scoring.

BA Scouts make a nice little distraction unit when used in the Baal Strike Force.

Infiltrate them in, and if they're ignored you can charge them, S5 @ I5 is not too shabby for such a cheap unit. Ideally you want to be looking to tie something up with them so you hard hitting units get get into combat.

Worse case, they get shot up and it's less shots going at your valuable units.

Double Fusion Crisis Suits all day. Great for threatening tanks and a fast obsec unit in an Enclave list.
