Actually this build saw it's highest win rate in 6ed. In fact you didn't even need draigo to perform the gate shenanigans for you back then. You could take coteaz, a couple librarians/grand masters, and Loth/Tiggy.
For sheer unfun of playing the deathstars of 6ed were every bit as bad as the uber super heavies that got introduced later in 6ed...which BTW were more powerful than they are in 7ed as D weapons were vastly more powerful in 6ed. I actually much prefer 7ed than any of the other editions, score as you go missions are a huge step in the right direction for game balance and fun.
To be completely fair though every edition has had some major mess ups. People don't know broken until they played a swooping hawk exarch back in 3ed...I actually tabled a 3000 pts army in a single assault phase with my less than 300 pts swooping hawks unit following my wraithguard wall in close to the opponent. That is what OP and broken truly mean.

I'm always surprised at finding myself agreeing with that, despite how many problems it had. I never thought I'd prefer 5E over a subsequent edition, 5E had its fair share of problems (Kill Points and Wound Allocation particularly), but it just played so much better as a *game*.
Personally, I'd like to take 5E, add in the 7E embarked passenger effects (e.g. shaken/stunned can apply to passengers), snapfire, rapid fire, FNP, and wound allocation rules, 6E's cover rules, along with 4E VP's instead of Kill Points, and you'd have a pretty stellar ruleset that could really stand the test of time.
Go for it, man. No edition was perfect, and by combining your favorite features from a couple, you can probably make something better than the sum of its parts. It's certainly a lot easier than making new 40k rules from scratch, which many people in the Proposed Rules section do to try and fix 40k. The biggest issue would be finding a gaming group who'll play your version with you, but if you have friends who play with you and aren't TFG's, it shouldn't be a problem.

My group of mates want to do the same, problem is we visit WW and stores fairly often to use their tables.
Do they have an issue with players using older rulesets or ban it just like uncoated figures?

Patrick,
Casey here. Way back from Dave Fay's GT, 2012.
Man, I'd love to return to 5e Dark Eldar (wyches with 4+ FNP!) . I'd even put up with GK PsyfileMan dreads again.
A *lot* of guys reminisce that 5e might've been 40k's Golden Age.
Bummer that Los Angeles is too far for casual game night.

Hey Casey, I do remember you and I sent you a PM. Good to hear from you! It's funny that you mention Dave Fay's GT in 2012 since that was the last time I played competitive 40k since it was right before 6th edition came out. (I've been playing a lot WH Fantasy in the meantime.)
Anyway, I agree with the thoughts on 5th edition being the "Golden Age of Tournaments" and I think even Kyle mentioned that way back on the 40k Radio podcast. ( BTW, does that even exist anymore?) These days, I just think that a lot of long-time players and fans of the hobby are shelving the game and their army. I have way too much time, effort, and money invested into this hobby to do that.
@ Baldeagle91 - I don't know if GW would knowingly let you play an older edition at WW. However, here's the beauty of it: The game looks the exact same when you see the models on the table top. Without someone watching and listening to your game and assuming you don't leave your old codex books and rule books lying about, I don't know how they would know enough to care.
@ fallingq - So, as of right now I want to stick to a set of rules that's available and acceptable for everyone. I could change things around and make some house rules, however in the back of my mind what I truly hope to see is other gaming groups take notice and start to do the same thing. I'd eventually like to be able to walk into a game store or club for a pick-up game and not play 20 questions with my opponent and instead just say, "5th edition, 2000 points good for you?" and roll dice from there. I truly think that most 40k players who want to play pick-up games and meet new folks in the hobby want some simple confines to work with.
Good times!

I can't speak for now days, but back at the old US HQ Bunker from 3rd-5th there used to be this group of 3 guys that would come in every other month or so and they ONLY played 2nd ed Blood Angels vs Tyranids. They kept to a little corner in the back occasionally bought something, but the staff left them alone because they made it clear they had no interest in playing anything else. Now that was a long time ago and I haven't spent much time in a GW since, so who is to say. Logic would say as long as people are occasionally buying stuff they won't care but GW has a history of being illogical.

My local gaming group have gone back to 2nd edition with a casual house rule (the "Don't Be A D*ck" rule) due to the beautifully free-reign army lists and haven't looked back and probably never will to be honest.

I mostly play a very heavily houseruled 40k to the point that it's basically as different from 7e as 3e was from 2e.
When not playing that, I playtest rules me and my fellow 1d4channers create. /tg/ edition Tyranids vs Knights Inductor awww yeeees
