Why exactly does there need to be a thread about this?

3. Because its not over yet. If you say no to a progressive, they just demand louder and have carte blanche to accuse you of intolerance without threat of their hypocrisy called out..

You say this as if saying "no" to a fundamentalist yields more positive (or, for that matter, different) results.

The story itself seems a stretch for the cause of animal rights, to me, personally. I absolutely abhor any animal sport fighting as i'm an animal lover myself, but this seems.... superficial at the very best.

That's because it's PETA. They don't care about animal rights, they care about getting lots of attention. They've just figured out that big dramatic protests over "animal rights" are a good way to get attention.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Agreed. A high amount of my animal money goes to the HSPCA. Our local chapter is very effective and run by some very nice, dedicated, and caring people. The rest we give to cat and dog rescue ventures (basically volunteers that run sweeps of kill shelters, foster those animals they save, and pay to ferry them - sometimes in long chains of relay travel across country! - and find them adoptive homes). Our pup was a rescue saved by such a venture, and our cat is a rescue abandoned barn cat. They're pretty much like our second and third kid.
