Poll
Is there a genuine appetite for an alternate 40K ruleset?
Yes, I'd love to play a different version of 40K
I'd like substantial rule changes, but only from an official source
No, I'm happy with 40K as is.
No, irrespective of how good it is, or how bad 40K gets, I'd never consider another ruleset.

I'd play ones that would be "realistic".

By realistic I assume you mean logical and didn't contain things which broke your suspension of disbelief? Or are you saying you wouldn't play a game that didn't give heavy weapons all infinite range because in reality they'd be effective over far greater distances than the tabletop portrays?

Well, one implies another, doesn't it? I put "realistic" in quotation marks because some of stuff going on in Wh40k is probably physically impossible.

I would as I already do. My group sorta veered off during 5th Ed. and I don't see us ever returning to stock GW rules.

Considering how many house rules my group uses, I guess we already play an alternative 40k.

Wow, that Gates of Antares ruleset really would suit 40k well. Just needs some vehicles and special rules and then you can straight up port 40k profiles into it and call it a day

There's additional beta rules for vehicles, mounted units, large and fast units, and buildings alreadu. Vehicles need some tweaking to allow for things like walkers and skimmers, but its basically all there.

I have played some people's variants of several established games, and despite good intentions, they have invariably been worse than the original.

I'd try it out if a friend came up with a variant and wanted to play me in a game with the rules, but my expectations are pretty low when it comes to fan-rules.

I'm not necessarily saying the alternate set is a fan made set, it could, theoretically, be produced by someone with games design experience, an ex member of the studio or even Rick Priestley himself, just not the rules you can pick up tomorrow in a Gw store.

In my opinion community versions of rules can only take root when main support dies. Take Corehiem or Necromunda Community Edition for example.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I wish GW would just outsource their rules and codexes to another company, like Fantasy Flight and be done with it. They've been shotgunning out their IP to every video game studio they can, and they're clearly intent on marching down the "Models not Games" mentality theyve been trumpeting. Just make the damn models, and partner up with someone with the wherewithal to make a real tabletop game!

That would be so nice. But since the codexes sell so well (as the juicy SM numbers next week will tell us), they'll never do it. Heck, if things go the way htey are I bet GW would outsource the MODELS and keep printing rules!

One Page 40k might be what you're looking for. Plenty of army lists, two pages of rules max (that's if you're using the advanced rules) and even rules for campaigns if you really want to 'forge the narrative.'

I would love it to happen.

But I do remember when I first enountered all the rules moaning. It was when 6th came - especially from IG, who were butt-hurt. Sometimes I think everyone's perfect version of the rules is the one where his/her army reigns supreme.
