How do you react to the below scenario?
That is so freaking cool.
Sounds fine to me. It's just a friendly game.
He should have said something about it then he asked for the game but I can deal with that
I will expect him to answer questions when I ask him what model that unit is but otherwise I'm fine with the idea
No, if you're playing [Faction] you should be using models that fit the established fluff/Aesthetic for that faction.
I will only play against GW Official Models. Buy some models and green stuff and try again when you've done that.

I play with a Chaos player who uses converted WW2 tanks for predators. They actually look pretty decent.

Many people have mentioned "proxies" regarding this thread, but what the OP described isn't proxying at all. It's full scale conversion, using all GW legal parts and materials.

Conversions have been widely accepted as legal for a very long time in 40k. The core rulebooks for 40k have mentioned using conversions. Many of the largest tournaments such as NOVA and Adepticon have allowed conversions with or without prior TO approval.

Back when GW put more input in on rules, they even had something called "the Warrior's Code" that basically said conversions should be made using at least 90% GW bits, attempting to codify rules for conversions to cash in on other people's creativity. Of course, no one, including the tournaments, follows that GW cash grab rule, but it does display just how prolific the idea that conversions are acceptable is.

The 96% "Would Play" result of the above poll is also pretty telling of what the overall community expects.

Answers 1, 2, and 4 are all basically the same thing. No one who WOULD play against him would be ok with him stonewalling you when you asked him what a model was, so if one answer applies, they basically all do.

There is NO SUCH THING as MORE ADVANCED in 40k!!! There are ONLY 2 LEVELS of RULES: Basic and Advanced. THE END. Stop saying "More Advanced". That is not a recognized thing in modern 40k!!!!

I think it is actually cool. However, I would probably have to repeatedly ask "and this unit of guys is what again?'

We have a guy in out LFGS that has Space Wolves TWC modeled on eldar vipers and bikes with servo skulls as fenris wolves. I personally love it.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

Not a big deal if theings look awesome.

Because of a windfall that granted me a huge 3rd Ed Dark Eldar army for free, my Eldar army is heavily based around a (pre-Forgeworld) Corsair pirate theme, with 3rd edition Dark Eldar warriors standing in as basic Guardians, and 3rd Ed Reaver Jetbikes counting as all my standard Eldar Jetbikes. I count all the Splinter rifles as Shuriken Catapults. All other special and heavy weapons look like what they are, even on my converted hand-to-hand Guardians who have the current Dark Eldar specials on the old 3ed. Warrior bodies.

My Shining Spears are 99% the current Reaver Jetbikes, with the addition of a Cold One lance arm for the laser lance.

I also have an army that if played nowadays is standard Space Wolves, but uses my old 13th Company army from the Eye of Terror summer campaign, who used to be made with about 50% Chaos bitz. Most newbies would probably think I am playing a converted Chaos army with no daemons and get confused.

The Scenario is not that he made conversions but that he took base materials and used his talents in sculpting to create a model where there was none.

As in he went from a Lump of clay to a Model using nothing but his talent and time.

Additionally, it's clear that there's a lot of work put into these - so it's not like I'm fighting someone claiming a pop can is a Carnifex ("Hello boys!" - cookies for whomever gets the reference).

I assume it is Turn Signals on a land raider?

Ah, ok, I misread this line, thinking it said he converted 1 factions models to the other:

But either way, it doesn't change anything. Scratchbuilds have just as much, if not more acceptance in 40k than conversions, as up until just very recently, there were always several units that GW didn't produce a model for, and scratchbuilding/converting was your only option. That's a lot of sculpting to make an entire army by hand. I'd definitely play against the guy.

But then, I'd probably play against a guy using the plastic green army men as guardsmen troops, so long as they were based and sized properly. I'm thinking about putting together such an IG army myself. lol

For the price difference, maybe 50 bucks in army men and green stuff, compared to 550 from GW for the same army, I could probably be ok with some people not accepting playing against my army. Besides, I have a trump card. It goes something like this:

Hey, want to play against my custom made imperial guard I made out of these guys?

No? Ok, well I have a perfectly GW legal 3000 points of Eldar over here instead then.
