I do like Space Marines but I've always found that they're too powerful; especially with their new codex which makes them better than Eldar.

40k in general is just too ridiculous now :(

Marines are a bit feast or famine to me.

I can't take the power fantasy-part of the Space Marines, where they essentially are your sorta-legit way of potraying a genocidial maniac with a penchant for facism and racism, which I see a bit too often from time to time. That, combined with the frankly ridiculous fluff about them being unharmable, unkillable, unstoppable machines of war with weapons that can blow up tanks and so on makes them one of the most annoying and flat-out condescending faction in any fictional universe I know off.

On the other hand, I have something for the ornate look of the Marines, and I love anything that seems even a wee bit holy, angelic or knightly (Paladin player me) , so they got that going for them. When the fluff instead chooses to focus on the Marines as divine saviours, angelic warriors and knights and such, I am caught. I like how Marine fluff can make them potray any sort of historical fighting body very well (from vikings to holy knights), and truth be told, their gear is awesome - Powerful and clunky, with a real edge you don't see with, say, Eldar.

So, basically, as with all Factions, it depends on potrayal. I love the selfish paladins in space, clad in ancient and ornate armours and doomed to fight the worst the galaxy can offer, but I hate the superhuman genocide machines with no regard for any life other than the human ones, who are basically a way of playing out all the fascist power fantasies at once.

I don't really have anything against SM. Granted, I haven't legitimately played a full game of Warhammer since I was...oh....15? I'm 27 now and looking to get back into the game with some orks, BUT that aside, I have nothing against the marines. However, I will say in regards to the Imperium of Man I much prefer the Imperial Guard as they represent a more "realistic" approach to the 41st millenia. I know...i know. 40k isn't realistic at all but Imperial Guard, to me is more relatable............. I dunno. I'm rambling. I love military history so sticking pseudo-Soviet/German soldiers into the far reaches of the galaxy is awesome. But then again the Space Marines DO have some pretty eye-pleasing paint schemes.
