Ew, ran a Terminator squad for the first time in years yesterday. Got shot up by plasma and died, then the survivors got wrekd by assault Terminators because of the 3++ the latter get.

My takeaways were this;
~ Would love to see Hurricane Bolters on the vanilla Terminators, storm bolters are seriously underpowered for an expensive model like this.
~Access to Storm Shields would be nice. Plasma equiv just hard counters them too much. Its no fun to have 90% of the games firepower do nothing and then 10% just instant kill them.
~A heavy gun per two or three Terminators instead of per five and you have a unit thats far more useful than they are currently. No storm shields on the gun bunnies, so that theres two distinct roles within the unit.
~Abilities like Split Fire and (smaller) Combat Squads can make them useful and fit the fluff and theme of highly disciplined veterans that Space Marines have.

And a tad more outlandish
~ Special ammo would really go a long way to making them a valid unit. Don't know if the codex needs two sources, but its the sort of thing Terminators could really benefit from. Alternatively, Combi-Storm Bolters (etc) for some tactical flexibility - they're not Devastator Terminators so their role should be tactical flexibility and weapons like this give it to them
~Somebody (DA? GK?) gets a +1T if in B2B rule, given how Terminators usually operate (huge armoured dudes that fill the corridor of the space hulk) that would be a valid rule for them

The Dark Angels Deathwing Knights get +1T if they are in btb with 2 models of the same and they all have storm sheilds

Personally all they need to do is make terminators have follow on fire.. like they used to... so all wounds they get to re roll as hits.. and make their storm bolter guns assault 3 ignores cover ap3.

EG:
4 terminators with storm bolters.. 12 shots... 8 hit... 4 wound.. 4 more shots (saves do not count vs follow on fire) 3 hits 2 wounds 2 more shots 1 hit no more wounds... = 6 wounds in shooting on average.. no cover save no save vs sme.. pretty effective.

The reason I say all this is terminators suffer the same way dire avengers do. They ended up breaking the rules of shuriken catapults to make people take dire avengers. Old old minis orphaned by power creep and use a basic racial weapon on their minis. Originally they nerfed guardians to BS3 but that was too crushing to everything the eldar had.. so they had a issue at gw.. how to make these old old model sculpts "fit" a upgrade.. termies already have the best save there is .. maybe they should get fnp (they should) but if they change termies they BREAK other units.. fluff and balance wise.. this has ALWAYS been the reason...

BUT

Terminators were only added cos of space hulk board game.. which came with gash minis.. so gw sold tonnes of lead upgrade packs ... they were a fan favourite.. so they gor shoved into the 40k tabletop.. they never really belonged to smurf design principles.. they have always been odd.. anway.. they have a rapid firing version of the bolter. It was the prototype to "bolter+1" before hurricane bolters.. before combi bolters.. before twin linked.. it was a bolter with follow on fire..

Thing is they buffed regular bolters with rapid fire so they should have buffed storm bolters to be equally "better" and they didn't do that. That was probably their only real omission.
