Mayjose.

Is it right? Apparently not. Do I care? Not really. Then again the rural north United States has caused me to pronounce a great many number of English words incorrectly.

I imagine that rather than the root being from Iranian into Greek it might be from a common Indo-European root. For example the word for a country dweller was paighan in Middle Persian which is very similar to paganus in Latinhich has the same meaning. This is the root word for pagan in modern English. If you look for a Persian variant it would be something very similar to 'maygos' in sound. A magos was an ancient Zoroastrian priest.

Soft "g" like "j."

It's always made the most sense to me: Magic (Majic), Magician (majician) becomes: Mage (Maje), Magus (Majus) and Magos (Majos).

No, I believe it has nothing to do with being American or not, since Doc is American. Personally, I'm on the Mah-Gos side.

Mah, as in magpie, and gos, as in ghost.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
