Is there new art and/or fluff in the codex?

This is the key question.

The Necron book was sorely lacking in fluff, background material - you know, the things that make you want to play the army.

The only good thing about it is that the lack of detail means that certain idiocies of the previous book - dolmen gates and pre-programmed combat fliers key among them - can be retconned by inference.

Most of the new codices have either been lacking in new art or fluff, or have this poor trend of the new art being exact replicas of the new miniatures.

The new fluff I've read of the the books post 5th have also been...weak, to put it lightly.

I'll wait for more detailed reviews, especially from non dedicated marine players, before I judge too harshly. I can't expect this codex to be any good in fluff, art, or rules department, especially for the price.

My biggest gripe about this codex are the bland, 2-d drawings with no shading. They're just static poses with solid blue or black or red. Not inspiring at all. I'd rather have seen a bunch of painted models than page after page of mono-pose marines.

What page number was numbers 1 through to the end. Can't recall exactly where and in what way the codex touched me, but it was bad, really sticky and deep down part of me knows I will buy it secretly and build a White Scars army...

... Or not.

Okay so I'm gonna play my old book. You think I'm just gonna show up in a puff of smoke, twirl my Mustachio, and boom theatrically about the wicked new sins of 7th?

mofos don't even know me and they be all like beyotch pleez I don't play no out of date books with my muffuggin dolls!

Hear that Elds? We can't play Mordheim today cuz I refuse to play with that dingy old book. You have to bring your desktop computer and download the current Coreheim update. I have it, but I can't play you unless you download it and I have to make sure you didn't steal it so I have to watch you download it. Also you have to bring Cheetos. Not cheezies. Chettos.

Come on, who is the loser there huh? The guys asking you to let him play his old book or the guy refusing a game because someone doesn't have the right paperweight?

Well. That was rather melodramatic.

Yeah Those Page fillers are a bummer.

Still Having basically changing the way every non DT Vehicle works, TFC, the Glad, the massive buffs to Templar, and not altering relics so people can still play there previous equipment i think is well worth an update. and really 70 bucks every 2 years is like nothing.

Back on topic. There were things I appreciated about some rules, like the little changes that aren't over the top. But even strictly from a list building standpoint I hate the CAD changes. Moving HG into a slot kills me, I hate filling that slot because I like all the options and can never choose.

So, you admit that you do not have a single coherent criticism for the codex aside from "the cover is white."

There's plenty of new art, most of it looks pretty good [cover image and pages 4-7, 9, 13, 17, 21, 23, 24-32, 34-35... it goes on]. Admittedly it's not crazy looking like the old stuff from RT/2nd/3rd, but it's still high production value new art. As far as fluff goes, it's more difficult to discern the new from the old, but I believe there is at least one new fluff piece on page 13. It's not of amazing quality but it is a new piece.

Yeah, it's a little irritating that every single unit picture is now a photograph of the models in question and almost all of those are painted as Ultramarines. I do generally like the new art though. I'm glad that they're finally using the models as reference. It was very irritating to see Astartes of bizarre and impossible proportion marching around the pages of my codex. Remember that old picture of Calgar on his throne on Ultramar? Dude was like 50 heads tall. Gross.

Plus the actual rules updates (you know, the primary function of a codex) are in general good. Some of the formations are a little OP (Skyhammer, Battle Company) but that's true of any recent book.

Thanks for the info.

I'll have to flip through it myself, but if its anything like the admech books in terms of art and model pictures, I'll stay in the disappointing camp. The pages dedicated to colour schemes is pretty embarrassing if the ad mech is any indication of the future, and the amount of page waste to add pictures above every single unit entry in the army list section is unnecessary.

Actually collecting the old Codex's is more satisfying. On eBay you can pickup Codex's for less $5 each. I think they have a lot 30-50% more fluff that gets me excited about the 40k universe. The new codex's seem to be more full of photography than original content.

Depends on what it's 70 of. 70 pennies wouldn't buy you a can of Pepsi in most places. 70 $50,000 bills would buy a house in most places. 70 bucks in relation to most of our hobby budgets is probably on the smaller side. But what do I know, I just had my Thunderhawk delivered.

That kills you? Why? Demi Company, Scout Force(or whatever), Command Structure with Calgar/captain/chaptermaster + Honor Guard and you've got a Gladius and didn't use your elites on an HG The Gladius is actually more flexible than I originally imagined, though including a single librarian is still something of a head scratcher.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.
