And if you start playing Chain of Command, you can be one of those people, who, when someone says the words "Bolt Action", feel compelled to talk about Chain of Command. Not that it's any good, or anything - as far as I can tell, most people do it because they need to justify having purchased another mediocre TooFatLardies ruleset.

So - is Chain of Command for you? If you like your miniatures games to play like they were designed in 1995 by people dissatisfied with how tin flats are being phased out in favor of miniatures with proper proportions, and to look like they were designed, again, in 1995, in Paint Shop Pro on Windows 3.1, sure. It's one of those games where the publisher excitedly exclaims that 2,000 copies have been sold despite most purchases having put on a bookshelf and then sold for $2 at a wargaming flea market ten years later.

Say how ye feel JD! Your honesty is always refreshing mate! Keep it up!

I remember ye 'spat' with Rich on TMP...

I dont play BA or CoC so Im not saying a word on this one! I aint getting caught in the crossfire!

FUBAR - 1 page of rules which play very well and allow for some series tweaking to get them working just how you want for the period your playing. The base rules themselves are very effective though and are more then playable without any adjustments.
I 100% recommend giving them a go if your considering anything 20/21th century.

Chain of Command is good if you like your games to feel like WWII and look like WWII. Blot Action is good if you don't.

Not familiar with Chain of Command, but wasn't horribly impressed with I Ain't Been Shot Mum.

The blind aspect had potential, but fails a bit (as you never reblind once out of sight). The rest was mediocre.

I enjoy Bolt Action followed by Lion's Rampant. Bolt Action is an enjoyable game that captures the feel of WW2 while remaining fun to play.

After playing many games of both Bolt Action and Chain of Command, I feel that CoC gives a better game, and one that captures more of the flavor of the era. When I play Bolt Action, I feel like I've just played WH40K with WW2 minis.
With all the talk about it, i would like to try Battlegroup.

Ronin, Saga, Muskets and Tomahawks are great games, and would recommend all three. Someone mentioned Wings of Glory earlier. I've only played it once and it was really fun, but Algernon Pulls it Off Again was also a great WW1 dogfighting game. Sails of Glory is also a great game that has rules similar to WoG, but its a Napoleonic navel game.

What an odd comparison. One of the reasons I like Bolt Action is because it feels the opposite of 40k. In Bolt Action, movement and suppression matter.

You might not like Battlegroup, then, as it's about as similar to 40k as Bolt Action is. It too uses six-sided dice and often requires you to roll some number or higher to achieve some game effect.

Yeah, I don't see Bolt Action as a WW2 themed 40k. 40k is a game about stuffing a 6x4 with a ton of models and throwing them at the other line. Bolt Action has more dynamic movement and terrain systems. A house held by a squad of veterans near a cross roads can be a critical point in a game of bolt action but would only be a passing note in 40k.

I would join the others in saying Bolt Action is a very fun game and I enjoy many of the random elements in the game particularly because I am a casual gamer and do not take things too seriously when my plane mistakes me for the enemy.

Muskets and Tomahawks is my favourite historical game. A big part of the reason is its based on black powder era which is my favorite for historical gaming. But I also like the card activation system and being able to assign actions differently within a unit.

Having said that I like the game materials and book quality better for bolt action. M&T's rule book is dated and the cards are not the best quality. Doesn't stop me playing it though.

Bolt Action is my favorite historical wargame to date. Great minis, fun and tactical rules. Random alternating player activation. I love everything about the game. There are a couple things I would change to balance a few things out, but nothing too bad.
