Back when they were good, I would feel terrible for owning two, but now that they are blinded, and the ease of Skyfire weaponry I will only bring one, or zero in a list as a Distraction unit.

Hello
So as the title states, just how dangerous are Heldrakes, specifically the cheese formation of 3?
IIRC the formation is an Apocalypse formation, not a normal one.
That said, Heldrakes aren't bad, just not the "zomg amazing" they once were Between Vector Strike getting toned down and them having their main weapon Errata'd back to only working in a frontla 45* arc, it majorly limits the amount of damage they can cause. No more killing a transport with Vector strike and roasting the occupants immediately after.
The autocannon variant isn't bad as an FMC/Flyer hunter.
Overall, not bad, just not as ridiculous as they once were..
Are you serious? The Autocannon is absolutely horrible.
Don't they seem passable anti-air with skyfire?
Absolutely not. It's a narrow weapon arc, only four shots, and at BS3. On average you'll land two shots. If you want AA from a Flier, there's FW options. Otherwise, stick with roasting stuff.

Also even with the baleflamer they can Vector Strike enemy flyers which iirc is like the old VS giving you an infinite better chance to pop up a flyer than the autocannon

Blinders, as in the '45 degree LOS firing arc it has now.

Oh that's a shame, I don't have much experience with fliers myself as I don't use any in my armies, and whenever I face any they only seem to get two turns of shooting against me.
As a flier is it unable to manoeuvre to position itself to get the arcs of fire it wants to? Am I also correct in thinking if it hovers it loses the ability to chose to skyfire? I would have thought the relatively high strength (for an anti air weapon) would have made up for the mediocre BS, which is likely to get at least one hit most of the time.

Now you can use the limited LOS to snipe special weapon models.
Since some of the top lists now rely on 3+ armour and jink I think the Heldrake is back in the game. At the start of 7th I wouldn't bring it at all, but now I consider it important to take out DA bikes, scat bikes and Tomb Blades.
They also synergize well with Fire Raptors and Hell Blades. CSM's best place to be right now is in the sky.

gotcha. I was wondering what you were getting at. Yeah, hopefully they release a new codex and forget to make it a regular weapon, not hull mounted.

Facts are chains that bind perception and fetter truth. For a man can remake the world if he has a dream and no facts to cloud his mind. |

I know a lot of people decried the "Dinobots" when they came out, but they definitely look awesome to me.
