I am not a pro painter, so I tend to highlight in only one color, so I can get done fairly fast while still making something look presentable. For units, I batch paint to make sure the unit is cohesive. That way variations in painting are minimized. So a full unit of Marines will take an average of eight to twelve hours, excluding priming. Specialized units such as Terminators, Sanguinary Guard, or Death Company get the full twelve hours or more.

Character units typically get a whole day devoted to them. Since I love painting characters, this tends to slow painting my larger army down. Right now, I have four Blood Angels characters and two Crimson Fists characters painted, but it has taken probably a total of ten days to get them done. I still have a few more to paint as well. Sadly, only a fraction of those will ever see play, but they are still fun.

Vehicles typically take a few days based on size. A Rhino or Drop Pod will take me about two to three days. A Stormtalon will take about four days due to the extra care needed in painting the canopy. A Land Raider takes a week. Smaller vehicles like Dreadnoughts and Land Speeders take about a day.
