I you think that's bad, you should visit the UK.
It's that time of the year when people wear poppies to show support for soldiers who died for Britain. Remembrance day is the 11th of November.
Nothing wrong with that, you might say
BUT
Prepare for a S**t storm heading your way if you should chose not to wear a poopy.
We've had people named and shamed in the media, witch-hunts, and all sorts of unpleasantness.
You see, these soldiers died for our freedom, but you're not allowed to choose not to wear a poppy.
Irony, eh?

Meh, I see it as the media running out of gak to stir people up with. Things cost money, even things we'd like to not cost money.

It's not exactly the media, it's two Senators.
And they don't have a problem with spending money to promote the military, they have a problem with the military paying organizations for fake "we love our troops, here is a veteran singing the national anthem and here is the ROTC Honor Guard" events.

I support the troops by making sure they're medically taken care of on weekends. This usually entails the following: "oh, the needle isn't that big. Quit being a baby and get your tooth pulled. Yes, I realize you're carrying an assault rifle. But I'm da boss. Oh, you want to talk about Magic? Sure, we can do that."
Sadly, it's not far from the truth. As it happens to be, at least 50% of the military plays either D&D or Magic. Or both. Forgive him. He's a social science major. I reckon it can't be helped.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I think D&D provided the experience needed for future officers to come up with elaborate plans that are way more complicated than they ever need to be.
Our gaming group (board games and tabletop games) also has a lot of military members.

Considering how huge the US Military is, this kind of thing clearly works. Plus, Seeing as we have an all-volunteer military, this kind of advertising is totally justified; how else are you gonna instill patriotism in little boys and girls? Ads on milk cartons? That wouldn't be nearly as effective. Sure, it's widespread, blatant brainwashing, but *BLAM* it's a totally justified expenditure of resource with no ethical problems whatsoever. No brainwashing propaganda here. No, sir, this Murica! Land of the free and home of the non-brainwashed masses.
