I'm making a 40k army half based around conversions from Vampire Counts, so that might be an option too.

Help me, Rhonda. HA!

From my own observations, the more tournament-oriented guys like Kings of War and at least locally the Kings of War group that has formed is 100% consisted of competitive league/tournament players.
This is in no small part because the larger US GT scene voted almost unanimously to adopt KoW after 8E's demise ...

I'm keen to try KoW out, as simple as it seems, but I'm building a new army to do that, as none of my 8E armies really have enough troops. As for 9E, I feel like they've gone too far away from 8E, though I also have fewer beefs with that rules set than most.

That's what I did. KoW is cheap as chips to purchase new (from an Warhammerite perspective). I bought an army deal and supplemented it with some spare old Empire troops I had leftover.

The minis are, well, basic but bang-for-buck they're great even if the foot paladin arms were almost always impossible to fit right.

As I said, the local scene has gone mostly 9th age, but there's a small KoW following and I'm keen to keep playing both.

I think Undead are one of the most benefited armies from the switch to AoS.

You no longer need hundreds of boring skeletons, zombies or ghouls. You can know make a nice, characterful army with a nice unit of skeletons, a unit of zombies, some characters and a centerpiece or two. And in the latter is where the Undead range shines.

You may have an excess of models, but you can keep them to play other bigger-sized games, or sell the to start other AoS projects. That's the beauty of AoS, being able to complete two or three armies and having them functional in-game.
