His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.
Okay, so plenty of stuff will probably be retconned with this game. There is indeed a S'jet in charge of this whole thing instead of archaeologist Mevath Sagald.
The planet is dying, but deep in the southern sands of Kharak, an anomaly has been discovered. Could Kharak’s salvation lie in the desert? Led by chief science officer Rachel S’jet, the Coalition of the Northern Kiithid sends an expedition deep within enemy-controlled territory to investigate the finding, which could forever seal the fate of humanity.
So, the ancestor of Karen (future fleet command and "voice" of the Mothership) is involved now.

"Nervous system" of the mother ship, more accurately, as she wires herself into it. I can't run it myself (must get new job so I can get modern processor...), but I'm curious whether the game will have any direct references to Karen beyond the last name.
Its very similar to the Homeworld games but not as good. Mission pacing also seems to be poor, I seem to spend a lot of time just waiting for things to happen.
I've found my first ship wreck and there are possibly "hundreds more" so quite a lot of retconning has evidently gone on.

So far all the wrecks are just wrecks (which look quite a lot like the Destroyers from Homeworld 1), although they have already been 'resourced' as the game euphemistically calls it by another faction.
It feels very much like any other RTS game at the moment in a way that the older Homeworlds never did. Resources are always in short supply (unlike the earlier games), units die at the drop of a hat and the tech tree seems to be smaller; units don't even interact any more (no more docking aside from aircraft).

Its not actually Karen's ancestor, its just a lady from the Kiith S'jet, which is sort of a clan type of naming structure. S'jet was known for science and the like, which makes sense for it to be present on the expedition, although it is sad to see some retconning of the old background of the beginning.
Overall, its a lot more hectic and requires a lot more careful planning with units, otherwise you'll be like me and end up
Spoiler:
trying to kill Ashoka with Kapisi because there's no CUs on the map left and an ill timed offense killed most of my forces.
Railguns hurt, and they hurt from afar. The cutscenes and animations for them are pretty good though, and I hope someone will try to remaster the remastered cutscenes in full color like DoK. Otherwise, its an average RTS, but it still retains something that makes it different than most things out, as the mobile bases make for a far different style game.
My army consists of about 80% railguns, a handful of support cruisers and a few captured units. You don't need anything else.
The game has become really easy now. I'm on mission 11ish and a huge blob of railguns, a pack of artillery cruisers and some battlecruisers up front to absorb hits kills everything dead with minimal thought and even fewer losses. There is a mission where you need to defend a strip of high ground which sees near continuous attacks at 2 points. I defended 1 of them using nothing more than 2 turrets and an attack cruiser.
I'm losing interest now although I think that there are only a couple of missions to go.

It is interesting in that the 'baddies' are actually right in that recovering the wreck will indeed burn the world to ash.
There is still a city surrounding the Khar Toba although it is buried under the sand (unlike all the wrecked spacecraft....) despite their being an operational Taiidan orbital weapons system that attacks anything near the wreck....
