When I attended uni (it was sociology, so no "studying" needed anyway ...  ) if you didn't like the food, you went somewhere else - it's not like it was located THAT far from food sources (Usyd - where the only thing that made sense was the library domain name. LUsyd.edu).

As previously mentioned colleges often make purchasing a meal plan mandatory, so if you're not eating the food you bought you're throwing away money. And very often students have limited ability to get food elsewhere since keeping a car on campus is difficult and expensive. Complaining about the food might be wildly optimistic, but it's at least something the students have a legitimate stake in.
