How exactly does that work? Say the Cadian 854th liberated/colonized a world. Would the older guardsmen be allowed to help settle the planet? Perhaps train the PDFs or even become pdf? How does colonizing it work and are the guardsmen rewarded?

Probably similar to the Roman practice it is borrowed from. Conquer a new territory and settle you old/retired legionnaires there. They are going to be more law abiding and in turn help mold the local populace into thinking like a Roman. Plus, you don't have to keep paying them or supplying them. Give them the land and some tools and let them put their training to good use.

All that plus they tend to act as a security force - also quite often they will be keen to send their children off to enlist

Exactly. There was a grey knights short story where orks had attacked a world settled by a demobilized guard unit; for an area with no 'proper' PDF, they put up one hell of a fight.....

@Iocarno24
If its the one Im thinking off, with the dodgy Inquistor. They barely had weapons. I dont remember them having lasguns out the wazoo. The orks were stomping them.

Id say they just drop whatever they cant make a decent regiment out of on the what ever planet.
Couple of hunji people, wont make a regiment, but it could errm educate that planet to follow the truth.......

The size and scale of the logistics involved in the adminstratum is so vast that literally anything can and does happen no matter how outrageous.

Think Baneblade company gets disbanded on a backwater planet after long years of fighting. A ticket gets issued through the Administratum and the Mechanicum to get the tanks picked up and moved onto warzone x.

250 years later the ticket has been processed, the mechanicus have organised a lifter, communication has been re-established with the planet that had been rubbed out on the star chart by an over zealous chartographer. They turn up and half of the baneblades have been sold for scrap and turned into an ocean spanning bridge and the others have been turned into a memorial for the moomins who history tells the feudal level society saved them from the evil Cartman de SuthPak.....
