Tau are really getting away from the concept of infantry aren't they. Everything these days is Battlesuits and if they can't manage it any other way they might take 1-2 min squads of fire warriors.

I am however not a fan at all of the fact that Tau and Eldar are basically operating on there own rule set now.

"Look at this big huge robot i just bought, it carries about 10 tank weapons"
"Ohh Cool, whats its AV?"
"Ohh im super special awesome eldar/tau cheese, its a GC or MC because reasons"
"Doesn't that thing have several crew members or at least have a huge armored hull?"
"Yep, but its armor is made out of Matt Ward's interwoven toenail clippings so its good to go".

I wish my Killa Kanz and Deff Dreadz got to be MC and my Naut could be a GC, same rules would make them a lot more durable.

Completely disagree with this. We are at the point where you can take whatever you want in a game. When there are formations available that allow 3-9 riptides, I do not feel like it is out of the question to take more than 1 lol

I have to disagree with you. Yes there are formations that allow you to take tons of riptides and the newer codexs let you take all sorts of shenanigans. However, few will actually play against that nonsense unless they to are fielding an OP army/formation.

I arranged a game against a new player in my area, he showed up as I was setting out my models, he proceeded to pull out 3 Wraithknights for a 1500 point game. I asked him if he could change his list to include only 1 and he refused, at which point I said GG and played against a SM player who was both a good player and a great laugh to play with.

Bring tons of cheese but be prepared for people to turn down your games. Its not fun for us non 7.5 codexs to play against all that cheese and spend the entire game removing models while inflicting almost no damage in return.

there is two things in play here. If you want you can make lists with only riptides surges or other formations. The codex allows it. However if someone doesn't want to play against that list be prepared to change it If you don't want to have a fun/fluff game go to a tournament or agree on a competitive list. Just talk about it! I played against a nid player with tau he said use your rules they are the codex. We still had a fun game because the guy didnt mind get shot at and I got eaten by his nids in turn 4. Was a fun game. So its all about what you agree too.

Well then you are just a poor sport. If you don't like the game of 40K like it currently is then don't play it. The game in 7th edition is different than previous editions. Basically every army has access to formations and the game is getting more and more toward smaller model count armies with larger models.

And having 2-3 Riptides vastly different than 3 wraith knights (which are GC). My 1850 point army has 2 riptides and 1 stormsurge and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The Optimized Stealth Cadre is just awesome. I would not pass GO, nor collect $200 before purchasing them (Ghostkeel plus Stealthsuits).

My second suggestion: Firesight Marksmen are an excellent second markerlight source. Take three Marksmen. Not for the Sniper Drones (though they are cool). For the Firesight Marksmen.

You need a leader. My suggestion? Aun'Va. fits perfectly with an optimized Stealth Cadre. His Warlord trait at the right moment plus their stealthy abilities = win.

Troops? Depends. Entirely dependent on your list. Breachers seem good if you need to defend a StormSurge (reserve them and pop em out to slay oncoming offenders), while Strike Teams seem good if you want to stand back and shoot (their missile option is GREAT). Kroot are good if you wish to use the Tau Pathfinder shenanigans to bring them onto the enemy's long table edge (ala Snikrot) and so on. Troops are pretty flexible to their purpose.

Broadsides are always good but they shouldn't be purchased until the Ghostkeels are in hand.

Fast Attack: you will need Markerlights. Marker Drones are better. I suggest the Drone Net Formation OR a Commander with Drone Controller to lead a unit of Markerdrones.

Except that Tau, Necrons, SM and Eldar aren't 7th Edition, they are 7.5 Edition. Go take a look at the BA codex or the Ork Codex and tell me how they compare to your Tau codex. If you really think they are equal then I don't know what to tell you.

And As far as fielding 2 riptides and a stormsurge and saying theres nothing wrong with that? I agree, according to your codex thats right. However, If you really believe its fun for IG, BA or Ork players to set up there units for the sole purpose of you getting to shoot them off the table before they get to do anything I have a news flash for you.

Again I am talking about in a friendly gaming environment, non-tourny. If your talking tournaments then all the cheese in the world is good to go. But in a friendly game? No, unless you ask your opponent and he agrees first.

Also, I don't think its considered being a poor sport to turn down a game because you know your going to lose unless your opponents rolls the worst dice in the history of the game. Would you call a bunch of little league players poor sports because they don't feel like losing to the Yankees every day of there lives?

Cobleskill

2 ways of looking at it. well 3
1. In a tournament setting anything goes. or at least anything as allowed by the TO. Which should be determined before the tournament and posted, though I'm certain that there are those would set restrictions the day of the tournament for reasons. . .
2. In a casual setting, talk it out with your opponent beforehand. my only game in 7th was a maelstrom game against Dark Eldar, and he specifically requested that I limit myself to a single riptide.
3. In a casual setting, determine the limits with your opponent before the game, then make your list.

In a way, 3 is my least favorite as it condones list tailoring. 1 & 2 almost require you to bring a balanced list so as to have the most answers for what your opponent 'might' bring. 3 on the other hand allows your opponent to have some idea as to what exactly you are bringing, and subsequently allows them to tailor their lists to crush yours.
For instance, thanks to the Mont'ka campaign book, I can freely ally in my preferred ally for my Tau, the Culexus Assassin, without resorting to another source, one of the major restrictions that my group used to play by. Frankly, the Culexus allowed me to shore up 2 major weaknesses in my army, CC and psyker defense while limiting the cost of the selection - they were never going to get within range of one another for the '1 eye open' tests.
When playing 1 or 2, it would be a general fixture of my lists, but when playing 3 against an opponent who had no psykers, why not replace it with other stuff to make my force stronger?

1 is the only time that I would really considering making a skew list with multiple shooty MC\GMCs, 2 would require knowing your opponent and limiting yourself (and don't forget - your opponent as well) through careful negotation. 3 though, I try to avoid like the plague, and so should everyone else.

I plan on being able to make 2 types of lists, one where I spam small suits and one for tourneys. I'm pretty sure my local meta will support whatever style of game I want to play, just need to know in advance.
