Really depends on kind of terrain, but I believe the old rule of thumb is to fill 25% of the board with terrain then spread that out over the whole board.

So how many would enjoy playing on this table with a 40k army ; )

As much as I love a good dense board, I also understand that, in the same way that a blank board favors shooting over assault, a super terrain-dense board heavily favors assault armies over shooty armies.

So when I set up the board, I try to keep that thought in mind, as I'm one of the few in my little group that uses assault heavy armies, while my opponents are usually mid-range shooters. I normally go for about 50% coverage, with some shooting lanes and some LOS blocking sections.

Depending on table themes it changes the type of terrain but I like to use.
3 large LOS blocking terrain pieces-
large bastion or bigger buildings/ruins, large plateau mountain such as badlands bluff from gf9, tall and dense tree cluster you can't see through.

3 small area/cover terrain pieces/sections, swamps, light Forrest/hedges, craters, promethium pipes, rubble piles or wall sections

3 mid sized terrain pieces- small buildings or normal ruins,

3 sections of field debris-barrel piles, ammo dumps, tiny ruined corners, imperial statue, tank traps things that add character to the board mostly.

This gives 2 pieces of terrain per 2 foot board section. Place terrain so you have Firing lanes and tank size paths but provides cover and LOS blocking areas as well. Best way to do it is choose the 12 themed pieces your using and alternate placing them with 1 piece type on each deployment zone and board center tiles.
