Those are beautiful! I'm currently building up a Praetorian style regiment using Cadian bodies and Victoria mini heads, it works surprisingly well just using different heads on standard GW bodies. I really think they are missing a trick by not offering a range of different heads themselves. If the likes of Kromlech, Spellcrow, and Victoria can make a business out of it, surely there is money to be made right?

Seems like a simple way to breathe life into a fairly static range of models too.

Totally. I'd never really looked twice at the new Cadian range before (prefered the old metals, myself). Suddenly a head swap and a snazzy pain job and I did a double-take and my jaw dropped. I think they look stunning and I would definitely consider collecting plastic Cadians if they're going to look like that on the table.

I love Victoria's stuff, though. Her mixed sex "(Ar)Cadian Guard" are much better looking, in my opinion. The glaring omission in her range is a stand-in for the Steel Legion, though. They just can't catch a break.

Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

I have metal Cadian, Catachan, Mordian, and Steel Legion infantry in my original IG army. I use different uniforms (models) for specific roles. Mordians for company command, Catachans for veteran (iron fist) squads, Steel Legion for subterranean themed squads (fluff), and Cadians for everything else.
To answer your questions:
1 Cadian background is cool, but I like the look of the Steel Legion the most.
2 Bought 'em new, when they were released. (I'm old)
3 I really don't dislike any Guard regiments. If I had to pick one, probably the Tanith first and only, only because of fanboys, though. (I loved their books, just don't wanna see them on the table.)
4 Heck, yeah!
5 I don't look for rumors.
6 I have added comm link backpacks from the old metal bits line and newer plastic kits and converted some of my old sidecar style sentinels to have different drivers/weapons.

Hello,

I wanted to ask the community at large if there are any collectors of the following older Imperial Guard lines:

- Mordian Iron Guard
- Steel Legion
- Tallarn
- Vostroyan
- Valhallan
- Catachan

Howdy!

I am an an Avid collector of Vostryan Firstborn. I have somewhere around 60+ infantry painted and based, with another dozen or so in a box still waiting for paint. I addition I have a pair of Chimeras painted, as well as a pair of Griffon Mortars fully painted, and one Finished Leman Russ MBT with an alternate painted Exterminator pattern turret finished as well. In addition, I've got another ~6 tanks or so and two flyers in various states of WiP. Pictures of my force are in my gallery for any interested in seeing them.

Here's an example:

Bad picture, but you get the idea I hope.

Furthermore, I would like to know:
1: Which Regiment has the most appeal to you and why?
2: How do you obtain these miniatures including 'Out of Production' items if any?
3: Which Regiment do you dislike the most?
4: Do you still play games with your Regiment?
5: Have you heard rumours of your Regiment becoming discontinued or updated in future?
6: What methods have you used to convert/modify your miniatures to fill roles that your line may no longer have miniatures for, if any?

1.) Vostroyan Firstborn; they're just a bad @$$ group of guys. They wear giant furry hats into battle and gauge how manly a guy in based on the size of his mustache. Go read the fluff on them, I'm convinced the're descended from Chuck Norris.

2.) I have a bunch of them I got on clearance (70% off) when a FLGS moved locations about 8 years ago. I got a Platoon box (25 minis) and a single squad box (another 10 minis) and was then given another 6 or 7 blister packs worth of Vostroyan minis (2 blisters of snipers, a pair of lasgunner blisters with 3 minis in each, some special, and heavy weapons) from a fellow Guard player friend of mine who had been a part of a group of guys who went to an old Atlanta Games Day. The 'door prize' gift they gave out that year had been random Vostroyan blister packs as they were the 'newest' guard regiment GW had produced. So everyone that got a blister pack gave it to my guard playing buddy as he was the only one in this group who played Guard. He held on to them thinking he could maybe use them, but never wound up doing so. When he found out I was starting up Vostroyans, he gave me the small lot he had, which supplemented my force nicely. At that point just ordered a Vostroyan Firstborn Command box and a few more special weapon and heavy weapon blisters and then it was on to slowly collecting tanks over the next few years. It was meant to be. If I ever need more infantry (which is doubtful) I'll just trawl Ebay and get what I need.

3.) Cadians are my most disliked for no other reason beyond I hate how the plastics are scaled. Put a Vostroyan next to a Space Marine mini and you can see the size difference between a 'normal' military trained & capable human and an Astartes. A Cadian mini looks comical by comparison. That's my least favorite.

4.) Yes I do, regularly. Don't often win but I have fun with my mustachioed guardsmen all the same.

5.) None, though I hope and pray one day the give each of the 'big regiments' (those listed above) some kind of regimental rules a-la space marine chapter tactics.

6.) Basic conversions to tweak a flamer toting guardsman to a meltagun toting guardsman instead. Easy conversion, and the meltagun is the only special weapon model not specifically made for the Vostroyan Firstborn range. (Aside from the heavy flamer. There's no Heavy Flamer either but the regular flamer can once again be easily modified to be a Heavy Flamer if needed). Outside of that, Missile launchers can be tricky but not impossible to make work for the heavy weapons. Beyond that, the Lascannon Vostroyan crew mates perfectly to the plastic Autocannon, and the Vostroyan line has Heavy Bolter, Mortar, and Lascannons covered. It's a lot more complete than some of the older lines like Mordians or Tallarn.

The Poll is multiple choice if you collect more than one Regiment. Be aware that I have excluded Forge World Regiments, and Cadian Regiments, as these lines are current and are available for purchase in Games Workshop stores or Forge World.

Thank you for your time and kind regards.

Hope this was helpful, and take it easy.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

That was a great read, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.

If you have any more photos of your Vostroyans I would like to see them.

Thanks Thessick and for everyone else taking the time to post here. The poll confirms for me that the gasmasks and greatcoats tend to remain the more popular of the lot but it's good to see that all the regiments are being collected and enjoyed still.

Between

My guard come in two flavours.

Firstly, there's the Solstice Lunar III Rapid Response unit, who are airborne engineers. Their job is to rapidly deploy in the wake of a line-breaker or beachhead assault (preferably by Marines) and secure the area with fortifications.

Of course, more often than not they end up leading the assault themselves. They use Shadowforge Sci Fi Marine and Politburo Worker's Battalion miniatures.

Then there's the Ragamuffins. That's not their official unit name, which is a six-digit serial number only their commander's adjutant remembers. The Ragamuffins are a combined mob of veterans under the direct command of Inquisitor Layla Ondaran. They have representatives from multiple regiments, including Cadian Shock Troopers, Tallarn Desert Raiders, Armageddon Steel Legion, Catachan Jungle Fighters, New Tanith Rangers, Elysian Drop Troopers, Solstice Lunar Engineers and the Inquisitorial Stormtrooper Batallion.

Basically, every metal or resin male guard model I get my hands on goes into the Ragamuffins. ^^; Then they get some of the girls as well to make up the numbers. The only plastics are the Stormtroopers and vehicles, lol.

Catachans and Desert Raiders. I don't collect them (mostly due to catchans just being too fugly and Tallarns made from hard-to-kitbash metal), but I love the fluff behind those and would definitely throw cash at the screen if GW ever gave some love to them.
Until then it's Cadians for me
