I play and paint enough to justify buying models which in turn justifies playing.
If 40k went the way of Fantasy I actually doubt I'd play. I probably would occasionally play, but I'd end up mothballing my armies. Something about dead games bothers me. I can't get into games with no future or expansion. I like new stuff!
I don't play warhammer fantasy anymore, even though I have potential opponents, the models, and the rulebooks. So, I assume i'd have the same attitude towards 40k. There's just so many companies to move on to out there doing good stuff. I just won't play a game companies have abandoned and are patched together with a bunch of house rules.

I use the game and army composition as a very rough guide to buying miniatures. I don't play anymore. I mostly buy whatever I like and feel will compliment my army's collection. I guess I fall into that category of collector GW always talks about.

Need a third option for both. About half of my purchases are for gaming. The other half for the collector/hoarder in me.

Only for the game. The only miniature I`d buy if I didn`t play would be the KX139, just because it`s so cool.

If there's a good chance this model will never touch the table, I'll shy away from it.

I agree, part of my decision making involves this and portability. I don't really buy fliers because they seem to be so bulky to take back and forth to play. I rather bring dreadnoughts and shoot those bulky fliers down.
In fact, most of my armies are infantry based for this reason except my orks who's trukks are that old gorkamorka varient., so they sit nicely in 3" trays. .

I buy to collect and model slowly now. I gave up on the game since 5th edition because for me, the rules are crap, dull and I hate arguing with people on how the rules are suppose to be. Now nobody plays so it's a moot point trying to find a game. I am sure if the rules were fun, people would start playing again, and I would be buying a lot more instead of what I buy now.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

It's a perfectly reasonable yes or not question.
If you don't play and don't collect, then the poll isn't for you. It's taking a poll to see what those that do collect do it for.
If you like both modelling and playing, then you pick "playing."
That's not how polls work. It makes it inherently biased, and completely worthless. I merely voiced that it's missing an option and creating a false image of why people collect or play.

I would like to know how many have played and resigned to just collecting. Because their army got nerfed/forgotten by gw.
Voted playing, altough my local group doesn´t play that much anymore, maybe one game every two to three months. The power gap between some races really killed the group.

Then some day, some wonderful day, when a new book comes out that will realize your armies' potential, come out from hiding. Everyone will have thought you had left warhammer 40k for good, but no, you had been training, preparing, and brooding for this moment. Return with such vengeance and hatred that you will not hold back, and you will destroy everything in your path. Like a true chaos crusade, wait for the right moment, then burst forth from the Eye of Terror and unleash your pain on the whole universe. And when they cry and complain that you are OP and that it's not fair. Reassure them that it's true. It isn't fair, but it's what they DESERVE. All of them, each and every one of them deserve to be obliterated into oblivion. And if they ask you to play with a fluffy army, tell them you will do so. But on game day bring the meanest nastiest, ugliest army you can. Give them no opportunity for victory, give them no opportunity for enjoyment. Your only goal is to inflict as much pain and suffering as possible. And when they cry, and they will cry, laugh at them, drink their salty tears, and bath in their sweet, sweet blood.

I'm surprised at the number of people buying 28mm plastic figures for painting and collecting. 90mm would seem to offer a lot more detail and quality.
Is it because GW offers such a range of SF figures?

I, personally, wouldn't buy them if there was no opportunity to play some games. Not that I play that much, but still...spending a ton of money, collecting and painting, and leaving them to collect dust later on is definitely not that kind of activity I would be doing. I'd rather go chute jumping or something.

People have made their thoughts on the poll fairly clear, but since I made it to try and prove a point to I forget who in a conversation that is no longer ongoing I'm not overly fussed.
The point was though that GW think people buy primarily to collect and that game rules aren't important, I think people for the most part only collect because of the game. I'm still waiting for GW to sell me a bust, or a 54mm model, or 40k civilian models. You know, like a model company would. Oddly though everything they sell seems to have to fit into the game...

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

As many already know I'm a pure collector. As an art collector I'm fascinated by the tremendous details the minis have and over decades of being in and out the warhammer scene I've come to appreciate them more.

Well, I got into 40K originally for the game, but as I play Chaos (x2), Orks and Dark Eldar, you can understand why those 4 forces are now clearly sat in the 'painting and modelling only' catagory.
The only force I have thay isnt a waste of tabletop gaming time is my Space Marine force (and that was originally a fluff army!)

Yes and no.
I prefer to build them, convert, scratch build and create crazy stuff.
The Game itself is just icing, but I suppose it helps make "goals". I'm building a giant super tank for the next game etc.
I want to build a giant land battleship though >.>

I always used to buy to play, but I had a strong focus on the modelling/painting aspect.
Recently I've picked it back up and the balance for me now sits about half and half painting/gaming. I'm enjoying it more than I used to, mainly because we now have a decent table, painted (mostly) armies and a decent understanding of the rules.
