I could see a Multi-Melta working in a marine Gladius that has scout (white scars, raptors). 5 dudes, rhino, a multi melta (or 2 in a Dev squad), cheap as chips and mainly for scoring anyways. But yeah, for anything else outside of a skyhammer force, the meltagun seems straight up better.

If you have the models, a Multi Melta, meltagun and combi grav in a legion of the damned squad works. Same modals as the Dev/tactical marines, just paint them different.

I use tons of Tac Squads, most have melt a and multimelta and are combat-squadded. The MM with 24" range is very handy. It also dictates the movement of vehicles around the table. In that way, it's value can't be over-stated. Every 10 man tac squad gets a heavy weapon. I've been spanking Tau-dar quite regularly lately.

Just as a heads up and a question really, with the stuff from the betrayal at Calth box becoming legal in 40k (I think in the new Angels of Death supplement) You can get a Captain in Cataphracti Terminator armour that grants slow and purposeful to whatever he joins... that might be useful for the devastator squads if you have room for him, right?

The melta spam works really good if you are Salamanders and you take Vulkin in your army. Personally, outside of that. I'd take grav cannons and melta guns. Maybe put combi-flamers on my sgt.

Armies:
The Iron Waagh: 10,000+ 8th Edition Tournament Record: 4-7-1
Salamanders: 5,000 8th Edition Tournament Record: 4-2
Ultramarines: 4,000
Armored Battle Company (DKoK): 4000
Elysians: 500
Khorne Daemons: 2500
