I try to mix up skin tones on my helmet-less marines.

Same here. It's more interesting to look at and more fun to paint when you aren't doing the same skin tone over and over again (still trying to figure out how to do a more Polynesian look for my custom Maori-based chapter. They keep ending up looking Latino).

Would people freak out if I painted him with a different skin tone? (I don't have one and not sure if I will ever get one). But this is something that I have thought about. This thread may descend quickly into violations of rule #1 but I'd rather hope we can be civil.
What are your thoughts on someone painting minis as different ethnicity than their 'canon' portrayal?
WH40k isn't Tumblr, dude. No one cares. Paint him hot pink with makeup and glue a tail on him and a unicorn horn if you want. Your model, your choice.

Don't mention that hive of bigotry please.
You're model OP paint it how you want.

Well technically for some chapters you would see less diversity. In the case of chapters that recruit from feudal worlds, they would be less diverse since these kinds of places are highly segregated to their own houses.
But thats neither here nor there.
One way or the other it does not matter because well its just a game.

I don't actually recall Ferrus' ethnicity ever being explicitly stated, unlike Raven Guard or Salamanders. Hell, I rather think he'd suit the ethnicity far better than many other Primarchs, given his background. I certainly wouldn't mind how you paint him, and for being so mature about it, I'd probably congratulate you on it.
None of my UM are mixed race, especially as most wear helmets, but my Cadians are mixed race and gender. Not that it really matters, but it just feels nice.

No one will be offended or upset. If they are, they're probably kind of an donkey-cave anyway.
I always mix in different skin tones with my guardsmen. Even just out of boredom of painting the same face over and over 100 times.

I have considered painting some of my Word Bearers with dark skin but they have a very Caucasian physiognomy and I don't know if it would look fake.

There are ways to annoy me with it by being weird about it.
Either by being one of those white power guys and stress that he is ok because you painted him white. Or by being one of those guys who campaign at universities against "white centric" natural sciences and stress before battle that his cultural background isn't clearly documented in the fluff.
