To the guy telling me to grow thicker skin. Look I know tons of people done really like dfts and that's no problem. However calling someone stupid for thier choice in model is. I think wolfen are ugly as gak but when someone talks to be about them (specially a wolves player) I wouldn't say "anyone who buys them has terrible taste and is supid. The guy is not that bad, we have played before and I generally like his enthusiasm and love for the game I just don't appreciate when that knowledge turns to insulting people blindly or taking it past your opinion on the model in question.

To everyone who seems to think this post was about facial hair: there is no social hierarchy based on appearance I'm just using it as an expression for the type of gamer. I don't care if you have mutton chops I'll respect you the same. I may laugh at outrageous choices when appropriate but that's it.

No beard shaming here

I'm not going to talk about the new Genestealers vs Imperial Guard board game with the guys who buy tournament list armies, have them painted by someone else and enjoy playing competitively. Tune your conversations for who you are trying to converse with or be prepared for different opinions.

If you don't like his advice, grow some thicker skin. He's not berating you according to your own account, just expressing his own opinion. He didn't call you an asshat for buying an inferior unit. He 'just shakes his head' and keeps any criticizing words to himself. That's pretty friggin respectful if you ask me.

Yea except not really when you blindly call anyone excited about it stupid. And like I posted he's not a bad guy but no one in this hobby needs to be discouraged from making lists that differ from everyone else's.

Shaking your head and showing obvious disapproval is not "respectful"

I thought GW removed neckbeards from the game. Isn't that where the term 'squatted' came from?

Using terms like "neckbread" can be seen by some as intentionally insulting, bordering on hate speech. It's better go not use divisive terms in social settings.

I have encountered many "Neck Beards" that were actually clean shaven.

The person in the OP sounds unpleasant, but isn't necessarily a neck beard.

If he is often caustic about people's choices in models and army list, you don't have to play him. And tell him why.

I was not aware that people were actually offended by 'neck beard' (a term in use to describe a specific type of person for what? at LEAST 5+ years now?) Also, isn't it kinda like the 'fedora' of facial hair, so to speak? Not inherently wrong, but the type of people who use it the most make it a joke in the process?

To OP: Sounds like you should either tell him your issue, or do your best to ignore him :(

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

You were not aware that terms that are used to insult people would happen to make some people offended?

Eh, probably poor word choice on my end. I'm more surprised that people actually take offence to it. 9 times out of 10, no one is called a neck beard for having a neck beard, but when they are being 'That Guy', again, in the same vein as how 'fedora' has become synonymous with "cringe" in a way. But I suppose why ignore something when you can take personal offence to it

OP, it sounds like this guy is trying to be helpful, but his personality or tone of message is off-putting. You meet quite a few socially awkward people in game stores, in my experience. Just try to roll with it. On the other hand, if you feel like he is harassing you in the store, inform the management.

<sarcasm>
And if you really want to cheese him off, tell him the the Green Tide is an illegal formation from the previous edition of Waaagh! Ghazghkull and is no longer valid in games of 40k.
(Yes, yes, I know, GW said something about it being OK, blah, blah, blah.)

Heard yesterday, GW has decided they want to get back the WFB Old Guard who are called "Battleline players." Because their game used to line block formation units up in a battleline. Some of them old boys are neckbeards. In a good way.

They should probably start with an apology if they want to get their old players back....

It seems like people are shifting the meaning of terms. Being "beardy" is not the same as being a "neckbeard". Beardy comes from being old enough to have beard, implying experience with age while also implying being daring enough to succeed at over the top things. Neckbeard implies being too young to have a real beard, yet trying to grow one to show everyone else you can, which ends up showing everyone your lack of experience or of being a source of annoyance.

I'm quite beardy, especially to the neckbeards.
