Your anecdote proves a crucial point: All those people desperate for a parking spot? The rest of the lot utterly full? Retail won't stop with the insanity of Christmas commercialization because, for the most part, people are mindlessly desperate to buy items and gifts at xx% off regular price, or line up on the streets to get the newest electronics the day they hit the streets. And when you have Black Friday bum rushes, principles like deindividuation set in and chaos really starts to take hold. Perhaps retailers aren't the ultimate cause; perhaps retailers simply take advantage of one's obsession to save a buck.

Large numbers of people gathered in one place working for separate or conflicting purposes is truly a mortifying spectacle.
