The itch to buy a new army is always there but i've pounded into myself that I won't buy another army until i've finished painting the masses of CSM that I still have untouched. The Start Collecting Bundles are making me cry at the moment as I would love to give AdMech or DE a go. The new Ulrik the Slayer mini nearly convinced me to start collecting SW but I then saw the price of it and laughed myself into a firm no.

I did buy Tyranids and Space Marines but nothing happened with them in the end so I took the jump and sold them.

I've been a loyal Necron player since day 1, but have expanded to Tyranids when the 6th edition book dropped because I wanted something to change up the monotonous playstyle that was 5th edition Necrons. Then Necron 7th edition came out, and Tyranids have fallen quite behind the power curve, to the point that they aren't even fun casually, so now I only play Necrons. When I play at all, that is.

I've thought about expanding to Eldar (Spamming Serpents and Guardians/Psykers, with Walkers and Prisms to back them up), but time and money has not permitted that.

I get a lot of urges, but so far I only have 3.5-4 armies. Originally played CSM, took some daemon allies, took a break, came back and found KDK which used a lot of the models I already had. Branched into Tyranids last year. Started 30k a few months ago. I say 3.5 because while I could in theory field a full daemons army, it'd be small, not very good, and I never do anyway.

But the urges, oh. I really want to do Eldar Corsairs, but I've got so much going on already and a lot of it is still finecast iirc. I've thought up ideas for Craftworld Eldar, idly toyed with some IG ideas, pondered Orks, but haven't actually started any other armies.

As far as 40k, I'm faithfully dedicated to IG. I love their style, I love playing them, love their minis, love their background... Everythig which is guard related in fact and so strongly as to kinda neglect others army that all seem desperatly dull and empty to my personal mind... So, as far as 40k, i'm the exact opposite. Though, as far as bolt action is concerned I'm a totally nuts about WW2 and so feel that as soon as my 1000 points german army is ended, I move on to a second one: so, well, i somewhat got the virus anyway!. Notice that US army stuff is community stuff which doesn't strictly belong to me... good way to make variety too!

Started in January. Let's see - I had Ork boxes sitting around for a year before I actually started, put those together and decided they weren't for me, sold them and started BA, played a few games and wanted something more competitive. Started Eldar, loving the army and models. Started Daemons. Planning my Raven Guard and Tau army purchases for months out once I finish painting my Eldar and Daemons.

I started for the game, so playing with grey models at first wasn't a big deal to me. Now though, I want everything painted, and since I got almost all my daemons secondhand and painted nicely (to my mind) before I got them, I have less models to finish painting there, so finishing that army first. Then I'll finish painting my Eldar, then get a few SM lists finalized and put together and paint my RG. Tau I mostly want to paint, the suits look really cool to me. Idk how much I really want to play them. That's planning for the future though, and I'm waiting to make those purchases. Minus some SM stuff I've already picked up.

Shiny Model Syndrome hit me hard for the first few months. I had to consciously dial it back.

Thanks for the title change.

I have quite few armies - marines thanks to the starter sets (all the way back to RT01), Tyranids as I am (obviously) an Aliens fan. I got some Imperial Guard because - tanks!

Tau was the first army I chose (somewhere around 4th-5th) for its playstyle and as at the time they seemed to be the only "good guy" army - though I didn't actually get to play them until much later.

The redux Necrons brought me back to actually playing 40K instead of just collecting the models. And I ended up picking up some Grey Knight models to flesh out my own demon-hunting chapter (which is composed of Grey Knights, regular marines AND imperial guard).

I have also been collecting orks for my youngest son, and my eldest son plays CSM (and now Necrons), so I've helped build and collect those armies.

Finally I have a Samhain Eldar army I have built for use by my brother as an enticement to get him to play - though he's only used it once (he started building his own), and its mainly composed of models old enough that all the aspect warriors, Avatar and wraith constructs are metal...

It never ends well

Started with CSM, expanded into Daemons and R&H. I primarily play and paint Daemons now. I tend to cycle through these armies for play and paint depending on my mood, but I haven't gotten the itch to expand outside of these yet, though I do enjoy some of the other armies available.

I have swapped a lot. Lets see.
Tyranids, Dark Eldar, Tau, Chaos space marines, Orks, Skaven, Wood Elves, Sisters of battle, Grey Knights, Imperial Fists, Ravenwing, Deathwing, Sons of horus, Warriors of Chaos, Imperial Knights, Black Templars.

When I get bored of an army, whether it is from the play style of it or bored of painting it, I trade or sell and get a new army. Keeps me very happy with the hobby and keeps it fresh. My wife did start a house rule that I am only allowed 3 armies at a time. So if I want a new one I have to sell/trade one for it.

I have the hopes of collecting most if not all of the armies and having an epic set up when it comes time to owning a home. I'm already well on my way. I only started about June or so of last year with IG which to ne honest might have been the most expensive army to start collecting. I would estimate my IG stuff at around $2000 bucks retail. About 3 months later I bought into a decent space wolf force, another 2 months later came necrons & grey knights which I got for christmas. After playing with them for a bit I started to mess around with traitor guard using my IG stuff that was sitting on the shelf and added some kromlech artillery and rapier batteries.

Now I've traded in all my old magic cards and was able to get a sizable tau force which I've been assembling for the last few weeks.

I may need rehab if this continues on at this rate.

My first 40k army was eldar, back in the RT days.
(I bought RTB001 plastic space marines first - but I wasn't playing 40k with them - we used them for laserburn).

Then, during 2nd ed, when everyone decried eldar as "broken", I started a marine army in order to get games in (nobody wanted to play my eldar, even though I didn't min-max and had no more than 5 warp spiders). Nice to see nothing's changed with the game though, all these years later. People still cry about eldar being "broken". :p
Also played wood elves in 1993-95 (only stopped because army got stolen off front porch whilst moving house).

Then, in 3rd, I started Daemonhunters, which became Grey Knights eventually. Also started guard (and then stopped).

I'd swap between them every few months, but didn't start any more armies other than those 3.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Never had the desire to swap armies, but I do have an itch to start an AdMech army. I started with Orks and I don't see myself switching any time soon, no matter what GW does to us.

I have my Alpha Legion in 30k and 40k, plus enough Cultists for Imperial Militia or Renegades. I also have some Fallen Angels and Cypher. My other force is a burgeoning bunch of Imperial Guard.

However, I am tempted to branch out within CSMs and Chaos. I do fancy a Red Corsairs Gorepack to be the Hounds of Huron, a fully-fledged Renegade force, two or three squads of Thousand Sons with several sorcerers and Ahriman, possibly with some Tzeentch daemons (painted to belong to Magnus' faction), and Skyrar's Dark Wolves. I've not done it, but they would serve as allies next to my Alpha Legion forces, so I don't think it counts as a new force.

I have other ideas for armies, and I have been tempted to make a Sons of Medusa and AdMech/Skitarii force, 30k Raven Guard/Space Sharks, Minotaurs, Rainbow Warriors, Lamenters, Flesh Tearers, and Speed Freaks Ork army. I'll probably plan out the armies one day and do a few of them to have more variety. However, I've been able to keep my wallet in my pants so far.

Hopefully that title is acceptable. This has nothing to do with the Army or whores. Just curious how many of you out there are like me. Always wanting to switch to a new army. Not because you want the latest and greatest but because you are easily bored with collecting your current army and the thought of building and painting something new is exciting.

So you often find yourself with half built armies or you collect a bunch of stuff and then sell it so you can buy something else and the cycle repeats itself over and over. How did you overcome your lack of faithfulness and loyalty to your first choice? Did you just hop around until you found something that had a grasp so tight on you that you even though you wanted to switch you often found yourself coming back to them?

I do indeed have the same problem as you. I own every xenos army, DA, IG, SoB and also forgeworld Corsairs. Can never stick with one...or three.

If you get excited by just thinking about all the different hobby projects you can do, then that is actually very cheap. Thinking is free. Just remember you don't need to realise all these ideas.

When I worked out that all these cool hobby ideas I was having I could actually have 80% of the fun just keeping them in my head (imagining which kits I would use for bits, how I would assemble, paint, play them) it made the project ideas I did act on even more fun.

Part of the reason I own 3 armies (and with the upcoming Death Masque set that may soon increase to 5!) is so that I can switch between them without having to get rid of one. My armies all have different playstyles and so I never get bored.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I hate painting but I LOVE building new models and seeing what sort of unique thing I can make out of my assorted sprues.

I have at least 5 different models of 1 particular roleplay character, all kitbashed and some converted.

As for armies, there was a time when the list of armies I didn't own was shorter than the list of armies I owned.

Since then, they've added about 10 new factions.

Im another one guilty of this before i came back i had a tau army (when i was 12) and that was all i played. since ive come back to 40k ive since got the following , not one of which is complete or above 50% painted for the most part.

DE , Carcradons (SM) , Thousand sons (pre heresy) , Thousand sons (CSM) , Nids , Necrons , IG , BA , Eldar , Cult Mech , Daemons , Various other chaos bits.

Just cant seem to stick to anything though i think thats more to do with balance / Local meta than anything else because I would Be More than happy to collect and paint DE / Chaos stuff.

I've owned most 40K armies over the years, playing different armies in different editions.

In the past week I bought out other players collections of Necrons, Chaos Marines, and Eldar, worked on my existing Ork, tyranid, and Tau forces, and ordered Death Masque along with Death Watch and Harlequin Codexes.

No, they don't all get painted. Not enough time when your constantly switching forces

I used to be guilty of this, but I'm backing away from it now... I sold off my Guard, I committed to painting my Sisters fully (30-ish models to go) and I'll finish building and get underway painting my White Scars before I dare start something else. I think my new paradigm will be one army being painted and one being built at any given time, unless a cool Kill Team tournament or something like that arises.

I used to sell my entire collection and restart a new army. At some point I've had an army of every faction except SoB even some duplicates, all painted.

It wasn't until I finished my second Necron army I was cured. Probably helped by the new codex my friends can't seem to beat.

Sadly I've been on a rollercoaster of armies over the years that I'm trying to now finally get off.

I end up getting weird theme ideas I want to try and then bounce away from them. My army steam is as follows

Started Chaos > Got Dark Angels > Got IG > Got Necrons > Sold part of Chaos > Sold Necrons > Sold IG > > Bought back Chaos Started Orks > Started Eldar > Sold Orks > Sold Eldar > Started Dark Eldar > Started Imperial Fists > Sold Dark Eldar > Sold Imperial Fists > Started Tau > Started Imperial Knights > Sold Chaos > Started IG > Sold Tau > Started Grey Knights > Bought Back Part of Chaos > Sold Imperial Knights > Started Orks > Sold Grey Knights

So the current Armies are: Dark Angels (Never Sold), IG (Sold and Rebought), Chaos (Rebought twice), Orks (Rebought Once).

Just so it possible makes a bit more sense, most of the armies that were bought were bought with the money from the previously sold armies.

Not only is that a lot of switching, but did your final decision process involve only keeping armies with Low Tier Codexes ?

40K was too easy with Eldar, Tau, and Imperial Fists. Feth that !! I want a real challenge !!
