The current tau Dex' is the strongest and allows a lot of fun stuff to be done as well as competetive stuff. That being said, I'd prefer some of the darker and edgier 3-4th Ed stuff in the fluff.

The corsairs are still stupid strong. Just give Eldar all the toys of Dark Eldar. (not like they needed them)
Please go re-read the book, actually, just read it, it's clear you didn't. Corsairs are weaker all around, from terrible, guardmen level leadership to lack of choices and on top of that, they are not even battle brothers with other sections of their own list!

IG. My best dex is the current one, which, while not perfect, is at least playable and semi-competitive.

I bought the 3.5 Chaos codex but never actually got to use it in a game, apart from when we decided to use it with 7th Edition rules. I enjoyed it to a degree but thought that it was lacking in some regards. I prefer the newer versions of Plague Marines than what you could make with the many options in the 3.5 codex. That being said I think my favourite Codex that I have properly played with is the 5th Edition Chaos Codex. I think the 6th Edition one was intended for 5th but with the Heldrake plastered in last minute. 5th has been my favourite edition I think, even with its problems, so the 6th Edition Chaos Codex kinda represents some of the things that are wrong in 6th onwards to me. I know the 5th was as bland as balls.

IGv5 was the business, and to an extent still is if taken in 7th ed. Marbo, Medusas and Discount Vendettas together accomplished great things.
SM Codex i'd say was v4, when the trappings of Hero Hammer were still alive with your army being massively changed by the inclusion of one of the named characters, and you could take 2 plasma guns in a 5 man tac squad.

2nd ed. Eldar codex outshines all of the subsequent ones. Complete, well done, fluffy and excellent writing/art/pictures.

Marbo was ace. I also liked Al'Rahem for some sneaky surprise attacks and Harker was actually useful back then.

I could see it being usable in 5th.
But I find it interesting that you were able to use it in 7th . What were the issues you had ?

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men.
Welcome to Fantasy 40k
If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.
Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

I have a real soft spot for the first wave of 3rd ed. codices. They were quite simple in comparison to later iterations but were very straight forward. People who dislike some of the more random elements of 7th ed. would probably get a kick out of Fabius Bile's profile being almost completely randomly generated . The looted tanks and Loota Weapons in the Orks codex were also pretty cool as they were straight up looted versions rather than their own unique vehicle/weapon. I went through two copies of that Ork codex, one had a summary table and the other didn't .
The 3.5 CSM codex was without doubt the most flavoursome and my whole army was built on the Book of Nurgle. It's a shame CSM haven't retained Legion/Warband rules when stuff like Chapter Tactics is a thing.

Ooooh this may get me in trouble with the general dakka community. Craftworld Eldar 7th Edition is the best codex in the game. Not because of the blatent power level in comparison to everything else... but almost everything is useful and usable. Vypers may not be as strong as scat bikes but they're strong enough so it doesn't feel like a burden by taking them Rangers are useful defensibly Shining Spears? Not as competitive as other stuff but damn do they pack a punch on the charge. Dark Reapers, Wave Serpents, Night spinners, artillery, hell even Wraithblades are usable! And then my love of the codex - the Crimson Hunters... awesome (not the best competitively but I love this iteration of them) Just need to buff the Banshees, Avatar and Wraithlord and then nerf the Wraithknight, Scatterlasers, and D-scythes for a damn near perfect internal codex...

For me, all the Codexes printed either during 4th Edition, with the exception of Dark Eldar - 5th Edition - and Chaos Space Marines - 3rd Edition version 2, or those which were used during 4th but printed in 3rd (Daemonhunters, Witchhunters, Assassins, Space Wolves, etc).
I just like 4th Edition best.

I'll second this. It has a lot of flavour, it's fun to play and the power level feels pretty good.
For DE, definitely their 5th edition book. The new one not only kicked them in the teeth, it also removed any hint of fluff or flavour.
Necrons . . . not sure. Definitely the 3rd edition one for fluff, but I was always disappointed by the lack of units and options (on the other hand, I dislike that Overlords were added and Lords were turned into sergeants - not least because I hate the overly-bulky look of the overlords). I like some aspects of the new book, but really hate others (not least We'll Be Back being turned into FNP+1).

I think the 5th Edition Dark Eldar Codex is one of the best Codexes they've ever produced, actually. It's really characterful, and chock full of good choices and lots of them, too.
