Warmachine is the best alternative you could choose.
When the 7th ed came out, our gaming started WMH. We had already some decent players incl. a press ganger.
It has a tight rule set and tournaments are supported by steamroller.
I suggest to start with a WM faction instead of Hordes one. Focus management is a bit easier than fury management. Cygnar or Khador are good factions. Cryx has been nerfed, while Cyriss is not what it supposted to be. Menoth or Retribution would be alternatives. But I have not much experience with/against them.

The look of Warmachine doesn't appeal visually to me. Hordes on the other hand looks sweet. Sadly I don't like a lot of their plastics and mold lines on the faces so gave up on them. I herd they got better so might try it again.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?
