Thank you for all your advice guys, I never thought of just buying the extra cards. Realistically, your right about proxying too, which we may eventually do. I was just curious what would work well out of the box for a novice and you guys helped with that. Appreciate it!

"Because we couldn't be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We've all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we've all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher's Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to the heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn't behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

No problem, I am all about keeping it cheap and reducing the amount of clutter a hobby can bring. This is a picture of everything I own for X-Wing ship and upgrade wise right now. You will see that not every ship has a pilot card and base token right now. Don't worry, I'm working on that haha.
I find that the most fun part of X-Wing is list building and experimenting. I can promise you my group would never try out any of the wacky stuff we do if we didn't proxy. I know at least for us, our group would get very stale, and we wouldn't grow as players as much as we do now. If we didn't allow proxies, I would have never tried out a four TIE Bomber list chocked full of Extra Munitions and Guidance Chips, and using Gamma Squadron Veterans as it's generics. It allows us to put ships on the table we might otherwise not use because we don't have the ships the upgrades come with.
We always end up buying the upgrades for the lists we like, but we understand that a limited budget can stop you from dropping $70 for the seven Crack Shots you need for an experiment. Well, sorry for the rant, but that is my groups experience with proxies and how it affects the overall health of the group, and keeps us pushing forward as players.

I think the thing with proxying that people have a hard time with sometimes is the expectations coming from a game like 40k, where proxying means breaking WYSIWYG and usually playing with a greatly inferior model on the table, as with cardboard box tanks and similar. But with X-Wing proxying the cards doesn't change the game experience at all. The cards are not directly involved in the game, they're just a reference you can look at when you forget the rules for an upgrade. All of the card text is available online for free and a printout from a squad builder can have the exact same function as the "real" cards. The only reason to insist on having "real" cards is so that FFG can sell you a copy of a ship you wouldn't necessarily buy without it having the upgrade card you need. If you take away the need to make sure FFG and your local store maximize their sales then there is literally no reason, as a player, to object to proxying.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Hi All! I got into X-wing about a year ago. My groups not exactly the most competitive, but having played games like 40k, we found it easy enough to come up with good and bad combinations. To start with I didn't proxy anything. One of the really refreshing things about the game I found, was it really didn't hamper me. When you're starting out the cards are well balanced enough, that providing you didn't pick the worst ships in the game you had a good chance. As the games progressed power creep has entered it and perhaps a new player might have more of a problem. However if your playing against another new player, whos got roughly the same amount of stuff. there's really no need to proxy stuff. It also means when you do pick up another expansion pack, its far more fun as one upgrade can completely change what you can do. So I'm not saying don't proxy stuff, but for the first load of games there's really no need to. As for what to buy? well a copy of each core set seems like a really great start. I'd want to fly Vader too, as well its Vadar! but what about picking up a Tie Advanced Prototype instead? That way you'd have essentially a 3 dice attack ship with the Inquisitor, with its title which makes it great. Plus theres guidance chips should you or your friend want to try out missiles or torpedoes. As for your Rebel friend. I wouldn't recommend buying the Falcon now. As the Heros of the resistance expansion pack coming out soon has the Falcon and an X-wing in it with. Essential upgrades to make x-wings better. The current Falcon pack has great upgrades, but if you have a low budget I'd recommend waiting for the next one, as it also seems to be better painted. Perhaps a better starting point would be the Rebels Aces pack? What do you guys think about buying the current Falcon pack vs waiting for the new one?

Old Han (which should more accurately be called Young Han, or Solo 1.0) is a great pilot, and The original CHewie pilot for the Falcon are great. Chewie especially can be forgiving of mistakes because of the lack of crits which will keep your ship in top shape until it's gone.
A good reason to stay away from larger ships would be that they are harder to handle, and turrets tend to overpower newer players, and the temptation to go "fat something" can be counter-productive at first.

I agree with you Peregrine, when I played 40k, I went out of my way to avoid proxies, or would run an inferior list. It took me a while in X-Wing to be comfortable with it. They scatter all of the useful upgrades in other ships, it would not be financially wise to have been buying a ship for every upgrade I need.

It's also worth mentioning that half the cards have been revised by errata since printing, so even if you play with the real cards, they won't necessarily have the "real" rules, so you'll be proxying either way.
Not even slightly true. The FAQ rulings are clarifications which do not change the card text - I think there are about three or four cards total in the game where the actual text has been changed (daredevil and biggs being the only ones I can think of off-hand). Whatever else you may accuse them of, FFG's rules are much tighter and less ambiguous than GWs.
