Jancoran wrote:The Oberlisk is awesome. REALLY awesome. So I'm not sure what you're saying here. It's one of the few perfectly priced units in all of 40K. It's absolutely perfect for its role. The whole Formation is very good. I have used it a large number of times and to date i have not lost while using it. Not once. I did get a tie once though to be fair.
The Obelisk can Thunderblitz which is uber. The Obelism can fire a lot of high str shots and can split fire (indeed must) like the monoliths. The anti-air component of the Obelisk is ok, and in any event, better than the "nothing at all" you would otherwise have. The gold that is absolutely flooding the enemy with shots and melee threats all at once makes Null Deployment shenanigans really strong with them. I usually start the game with one unit on the board, just to illustrate that. Only Skyhammer type things change that for me and even then, only slightly. The Solar Staff makes the threat of "sudden shooting" a non issue in turn one. So all in all, the list works. I am a big Canoptek Harvest fan or I would play the Obelisk more. but that obelisk does WORK in the Living Tomb.
It isn't really awesome until we actually know what the firing arc for its weapons are.

Well we have agreed locally that it is essentially an eyeball that rotates on two sides of the Obelisk. I do understand the possibility that someone will be a D-bag and argue that because it doesnt actually move that it has no arc. that is absurd to us. So we just ignore those sorts of people and play on.
But I do understand that issue and it has at least come up in games. Talking with an opponent about it will work and if not, rolling off will work too. In any event, assuming you can come to some agreement andgot on with the festivities, it's awesome.

Trust me, I'll buy an Obelisk once I get an FAQ that gives reasonable arcs. Until that happens though, you can't guarantee it is any good.

I did some reporting on my battles and I used the Obelisk in some of them if anyone cares to see what I did with the Necrons when I got my army. Got a STEAL off Bartertown for some Magic Cards I didn't care about.
Kind of a running journal of my Necron Games for a bit.

Hmmm. You are right that the Doomsday Ark fills a niche in the Necron codex (lack of long range high S/AP shooting). Might have to try one out for a laugh...

Well when you can pop an entire Thunderwolf cav or too with each shot, its well worth looking into. It was great having that firepower against them. That Doomsday ark convinced him never to leave his shields behind. Also kills Wulfen, Grotesques and so on super dead. Multiwound models are cool and the Doomsday Ark doesn't think so!
So yeah i definitely would argue that it has a definite role to play and an important one also. it's not in the dregs of the codex. Honestly there's very littl;e i nthe codex that is terrible, though I have to admit, the annihilation Barges kind of got dumped on i nthe new rules. I have three of them but havent used them once. I also have a cool converted Triarch Stalker which has seen a grand total of one game of use.
Outsie those two (and even they can be useful) I really don't have a lot of negative things to say aboutthat codex. Its strong, was hated for a reason there for a while and the Decurions glaring weakness (no obsec which is a good thing) allows even that to be balanced against foes who still value obsec over raw killing power. And I do! I have only played a Decurion list once and I just didn't think it was worth it. there's a point beyond which your fortitude is excessive and unnecessary for victory. Your list determines that but.... My lists havent really benefited from the Decurion enough to want to pay the tax for it.

Who is running Wolves without Invisibility though? Or at the very least a 4++ from Azrael?

A lot of people dont need invisibility to win. Also its irrelevant. the Ark is a blast and in ITC, you can fire blasts at invis units just fine.

My "House rules" are the ones being played by the majority of competitive players. but sure. you can call them "mine" if you want.
Point is, invisibility is broken and mostof the players in my pool which is really big, had long since concluded that the BS 1 thing was a way smarter way to house rule it before the ITC codified it. So many groups had done it already that it was just an obvious step.
But sure. it is absolutely a house rule. I agree. All you have to do is avoid any kind of competitive play in the ITC and you will be fine using Invisibility. the dearth of opponents you might encounter could eventually change your mind, but thats no concern of mine. Lots of people like the normal way Invisibility works and they play it by the book and thats cool. Just see more Culexus assassins i imagine in those leagues.
