Means the bases are working cause I wanted to do more with them, but I think keeping them simple and dark like this really makes the daemons stand out even more.

Finished off the next 10 horrors.

Also the first herald, My'leg is done.

Finally, Magnus arrived today which meant I could get started with the planned lord of change centerpiece for this army; A'tem, Duelist of Destiny.

I'm going to need a bigger photo set up for this. I think he works out to be a nice size as well, bigger than the lord of change but looks to be a fair bit smaller than the giant FW version as well. The kit also just falls together and is very very quick to build without the armour.

Unfortunately none of the 3 different bird heads I've ordered (phoenix, frost pheonix and griffon) have arrived yet. Plan is to give this guy the frostheart phoenix's while the other two are going to sit around until I get to making some soulgrinders. So far I've just changed the end of his halberd thing for the top of a banner from the horror box and instead of the dreadnought I've put his foot up on some sprue frame; I'm going to build it up like it's a little hill instead. I just really don't like space wolves.
Another plan is to greenstuff some fire into that open hand, no idea why GW just didn't include it with this pose cause it just screams fireball. That is unless the one that goes on his blade looks fine, thankfully for those interested in this kit the ball of fire on the blade is optional.

I think they could use a little bit more, but nothing over the top. Just stick some odds and ends in the muck. But keep the same dark, subdued palette. Stuff like a rock, skull, or armor fragment, with a good brown wash on top. But maybe just one per base. Just to help break up the space, but not detract from the model.

Good luck getting a head on the big guy. Should be interesting to see how he turns out.

Did a little bit of GS work on the big guy, filled in the arm pipes, worked on the connector things for his armour, and gave him a nice little fire to hold. Might make that fire bigger, but it seems good for now.

Still no sign of his head so might need to put this big guy on hold for now and get back to something else. Like painting the rest of those horrors or getting around to sculpting those brimstones I need for the warp table.

Maybe just give them the same base scheme I went with for Sylvaneth? At this point it would literally just be adding a little grass tuft to each base to make them the same.

Heh, that would at least break up the bases and make teach mini stand out more.

Started painting the next 10 horrors, might have them as a step by step this time for reference.

Also decided on sculpting up these.

Brimstones are alright, but I don't really intend on splitting beyond blue horrors as it feels a bit cheesy to me.
However as I'll be using the new Tzeentch warpstorm table in games, you kind of need to have at least a unit of the little guys for result 10; brimstone rain (set up a unit of 10 brimstones via deep strike). And looking at them on ebay they were stupidly expensive so I started thinking, then I remembered the Flamers. I remembered reading that their flames seem to have their own sentience sometimes mocking or even laughing at their victims as they dance across the battlefield. Perfect I thought for brimstone horrors.

Here's a little size comparison shot, I think I got them roughly the right size.

Either way I think these guys would look great on that display I'm working on as well and if the brimstone horror box comes out and I want a horde of them they'd make good soulblaze markers.

Edit: Oh also shows the added tuft to the base for like everything, horrors got 1 each. Screamers got 2 since their bases had more open space and the lord of change got slightly bigger ones.

I love how the jewelry turned out on that daemon on the bottom picture. It's a brilliant contrast to the chaotic natureo f the daemon itself.

Here's the little warpflames at the moment, just up to painting the base rims black on them now.

As for the horrors, just doing the super fun metallics.
Also I've been thinking as the heads still haven't arrived and they've just announced the new lord of change, should I just finish building magnus or should I keep waiting to have a unique lord of change to lead my army? On the plus side I've been looking at for stuff like that formation where its kairos and 1-3 lord of changes that could actually look cool with him as a centerpiece there. But, at this rate with how the heads seem to be dragging along it may be even faster to just get one of the new lord of changes at the moment.

Rather liking them

I think having a unique LoC would be best, because it'd really set your army apart during the Armies On Parade event you've mentioned been wanting to do.

Well the warpflames are done. Kind of scary how fast I was able to sculpt these things in the first place.

A lot of it was experimenting to try to get them the right size as well since I don't want to gain an advantage (well besides not having to ebay them for like $25 a base ), but liked the idea I had behind it of the brimstone rain result being actual living warpflames. Kind of looking back at the fluff about the fire the flamers would spread dancing across the battlefield and mocking who it burnt or whatever. The other way to look at it too I suppose is blue horrors splitting again into pure warp energy rather than being babushka dolls.

Also the heads finally arrived, as in the back up heads I ordered later with a spare for a soulgrinder whenever I get one.

I'm so so glad I put that flame on his hand now.

Because that little flame makes the difference between his head being thrown back in insane laughter, as all good lords of change should, and seeing if it's raining.

Also it's really cool with the size magnus is at cause his hand is exactly the right height to be grabbing, or in this case firing warpflame, into a knight's face.

And finally I ordered yet more dice (as my brother wants to start up a DnD group so might have some fun making something for that here at some point) so I got the dice for that and took advantage of a sale to even the number of those dice I had to 40. I also got some bigger ones as a turn counter; which only come in pairs so one is going into my deck box for card games while the other goes in with the 40k dice to keep track of turns.

If only that was a Tzeentch knight.
At 30mm the borealis effect really stands out like stars which looks pretty damn nice. As for the other horrors, just need to get around to basing them now and they'll be done. Then I need to do 3 more.
I've also been thinking about that flame in his hand, should I make it bigger or is it perfect as is? I could probably make some for his base or something at least.

It wouldn't be hurt if it was bigger. How're you going to paint the skin, same as the rest of the daemons?

Nice chicken/demon/man/thing.

The thing I like most about this paint scheme is that at first glance it looks like something a child did using the wrong paints. Or like those first few test models we all do and then just leave in the bottom of the box.

But then you realize just how perfect the scheme is and how they all appear to be glowing. Really nice job!
They really do look like negative images.

I guess that's the difference a quick scheme and waiting for weeks to do this project makes.
I've since fixed up his left wing where it went a little dark near his head and have his and the horrors' bases drying at the moment.

Thanks
I wasn't sure of it at times cause it really looks that way especially when you're looking at like a horror by itself but then it just seems to work the more of them there are together as the colours seem to swirl together a bit. Kind of why I made the lord of change a bit darker than them as well, so he still fits the overall feel of the scheme but he also stands out a bit more as a centerpiece model.

Plus I can always answer anyone who asks why I went with such a scheme with "why would Tzeentch daemons of all things behave with light like everything else?".
They're very otherworldly and that theme is the challenge I've set myself for this entire army.
Spoiler:
Plus I really like tossing these into paint when I'm done to see how they come out inverted cause it looks cool.

Smaller update as some friends wanted me to come along to a card tournament so I was focused more on that and managed to come second in it last night with a nice cheap budget deck I tossed together a couple of days ago. Anyway just need to finish off the bases for the lord and the horrors.

Objective markers as well from bcmarkers.

Just the standard carbon blue ones.

Finally the notebook I ordered for writing army lists and maybe army notes and ideas for later projects in.

Nice little hard covered A5 notebook with guilded pages as well. When I saw it I thought it looked like a perfect match for Tzeentch armies.

Awesome looking Tzeentch force you have there! I especially like the Magnus head conversion. It suits it aptly. And the book definitely looks Tzeentch-y. I remember in an old White Dwarf, Adam Troke wrote about keeping a book of grudges for his army (Dwarves, but it still applies to any army). He would even sketch out the battlefield, and create his own battle reports. Anyways, I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Then suddenly I saw it. With only a slight churning to mark its rise to the surface, the thing slid into view above the dark waters. Vast, Polyphemus-like, and loathsome, it darted like a stupendous monster of nightmares to the monolith, about which it flung its gigantic scaly arms, the while it bowed its hideous head and gave vent to certain measured sounds. I think I went mad then.

Good Lord this is excellent

I'd seen your sig around and thought 'huh, that looks...odd'. It's only after seeing your army on the display board that it all made sense and it's utterly brilliant! They look like photo-negatives. Glowing from the inside. Ethereal and unreal. Exactly what daemons of Tzeentch should look like!

Love the giant Lord of Change too brilliant kitbash.

Do you paint them with an airbrush?

Thanks guys
I've never used an airbrush, I just use some brushes I got for I think $5 a pack from an Asian dollar store. For details I have the citadel standard brush and an army painter 00 or 000 I forget which. Big guy I used the large drybrush I got for Paddington a revenant ages ago.

That actually sounds like a good idea, I can see a lord of change scribbling down stuff about the few who managed to beat them. Could at least keep track of wins and losses and I suppose failures of characters later, as I'm naming them if they fail enough I could just give them a new name and make a spawn to represent their demotion. Can never have too many spawns when playing Tzeentch.

Anyway the big guy is done. So far his name is A'tem, Duelist of Destiny, Lord of Change as I mentioned a few posts back cause it sounds cool and has a little bit of an egyptian feel to it to go with it being Magnus' model as the base but I've been thinking that maybe he can gain titles as I go along if anything cool happens.

Also being a Lord of Change means he should have more than one name, obviously something so short wouldn't be his true name.

And the horrors are done as well, well except those 3 I have to do to finish this first 1000 points. I'm still waiting for them to arrive.

I'd like to have this playableby Wednesday or so, so if they're not here soon I'll probably pick up another box of them to make them and the instrument and icons for AoS. Maybe some heralds as I'll need to get around to making more soon too. But, something more important I'd like to work on first is I need to get some spawns made. The Tzeentch table can turn any character into a spawn on a result of 2 (d3 unsaved wounds, if slain they're replaced by a spawn). Plus I wouldn't be surprised if I manage to find a way to make a list that focuses on trying to mutate things into spawn cause it sounds fun.

Edit: Just found a spare 50mm base, I may make a random spawn.

The detail on the wings is amazing! And I love how the reverse-highlighting of the muscles on the humanoid torso came out, too.

What's your next plan of attack, as it were after you get done with your 1k list? Gonna try to get that 3LoC formation that you mentioned a few times going?

So I made a thing.

Pretty much it went step 1 find a spare 50mm base, step 2 youtube the Akira mutation scene and the cronenburg episode of rick and morty, step 3 crumble up a ball of foil as an armature and add peaks for arms, step 4 add a greenstuff skin and sculpt some little flames here and there, step 5 empty bits box onto model.

Looks great! Really like the big bird-man model, especially now that it's contrasted by the drab colours of the base.

Love the narrative gaming aspect of turning poor-performing characters into Spawn, and the book of grudges idea is a great one too

Took a bit of a break focusing on the new Final Fantasy card game and such, didn't forget about these guys I finished off the spawn a few days ago but only just got around to taking pictures of it now. Was also waiting for the new Tzeentch stuff to be shown more before making any more purchases to finish off this 1k list in full.

First a scale shot to show how big it is to everything else.

Now for a close up of its... randomness.

It's like a demented looking ditto, and that's perfect for what's meant to be a mostly unstable mutation of warp energies; especially ones coming from Tzeentch.

And good news, about a week ago while trying to figure out how to fill out those last 3 pink horrors for this list (I didn't really want to have to buy a whole new box just to get 3 ). I found some of the original metal ones for sale so managed to pick 3 of those up and the musician as well (I'm planning on having 4 squads of 11 eventually anyway, but it's just a really neat looking model), just waiting on them to come in the mail.

Edit: Forgot to mention I'm about 1/3 the way through of painting 7 blue horrors I managed to scrape together from silver tower and the burning chariot (I brought them as bits to use as the last 3 pinks, but way too small).
