Depending on which canon you follow he either sucker punched or struggled with a drunken Russ.
Love the way Russ blames the alcohol for his loss in the version where they wrestle it out for a week rather than the version where he gets sucker punched.
Also makes me wonder if the Big E and the Primarchs had to use the Fenrisian poison to get an effect from alcohol like the Space Wolves do?

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.
