Gday mate!

I play necrons, and my main opponent loves him some guard! He loves traditional guard tactics, large blobs with long range tanks bombing stuff from afar.

So long as your necron opponent doesn't bring the decurion or any formations, this tactic works pretty well. The guard are best at static gunlines, so play to your strengths!

Bubble wrap the tanks with troops. Make him come to you. You will have a few turns to shoot him off the board before he gets into range, by then you should hopefully have whittled him down enough to lessen his bite.

This tactic gets very old very quickly, and is not fun at all to play against after a while however.

whats not to love about the guard? you throw bodies and pray it works! My friend doesnt take any formations for whatever reason, and i usually take two Armored Shield formations which gives me a 4+ cover save. Our first actual game i stayed put and entrenched myself, however the scarabs are utter since he uses them to lock my people down (learned today to focus on them). i'll try the entrenching strat again and try to get rid of those pesky Scarabs with gunfire and some battle cannons (making a new list that will be more artillery focused with all my vehicles. 4 leman russes, a chimera, and a Valkyrie). i will make use of those turns, however i'm not gonna be able to completely bubble wrap my tanks because of his Doomsday ark and its large blasts.

thx man, learning this as i go and with help from the others in the forum, got a lot more done this round than the last.

Yea I do enjoy my doomsday ark. It's the necrons only long range strong template.

Scarabs are easy, as their swarm rule and t3 means it's incredibly easy to kill them. Chuck templates on them and watch them evaporate

i'll start doing that! just my problem is i'm very reactionary and focus the thing that does the most to me. like the doomsday ark, its massive template scares me slightly more than the scarabs that are 3 feet away and easy for me to forget. Next time i'll focus on his scarabs.

I think being effective is more important than being artful when playing Guard. It isnt as if the Codex is at any kind of large advantage. If Necrons are wailing and gnashing teeth, this can only be good for Creed and his men! =)

Yep I wasn't saying its not the most effective way (that my friend has pitted against me anyway). Playing against the same strategy/army gets painfully boring after a while and a static gunline isn't very interactive (I realise the irony that a Necron player is saying this ). Now whenever he brings his guard I ask him to do something different (I never bring the Decurion against him, and every time I fight him I bring radically different lists).

If you are going to play PUG's, then by all means play them that way. I was just saying, if its against the same person he may grow tired of it.

Just my 2c

Fair point.

I dont use Leman Russ's really any more so my version might be a bit more pleasing to you. =)

This is pretty easy to get around. Night Scythes, Deep Strike, even Ghost Arks and Tomb Blades all give the mobility to only give your long range shooting maybe 1 turn of threat.

The Imperium of Man: White Scars - 1200, Raven Guard - 110 pts, Imperium - 550 pts
Tomb World: Nameless Dynasty - 270 pts
