Another vote for Kings of War, and if you don't like their models no problem use the models that you like (yes, even GW ones)

You can even use models from other manufacturers in official KoW tournaments (usually the only restriction being that you are not eligible for "best painted army" if your army is not 90%+ ofificial Mantic models, and that's for *official* tournaments, most independant tournaments won't have even that small restriction)

Fantasy Warriors.

There are legitimate free downloads of all the rules so you can have a browse for nothing.

Army lists are available for most of the major fantasy races; Dark/Wood/High Elves, Orcs, Goblins, Humans, Barbarians, Amazons, Halflings, Undead, Ratmen plus lots of mercenary forces and animal units -- dragons, giants, worms, spiders and unicorns. There's some additions for historical warfare (Wars of the Roses & HYW).

Most of the armies (apart from halflings) are on 25mm squares so you'll need sabots if you're based for Warhammer.

Similar size games to Warhammer; but actually a more realistic command system. Both combat and shooting are fairly familiar two phase bucket-of-dice affairs.

There's no official **anythings** for it anymore; Grenadier went bust in the 1990s...

There's some token sheets needed, but I've got some PDF replacements available for downloading if people want.
